12.10 - 12.11 beta drivers - BAD for folding!

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

12.10 - 12.11 beta drivers - BAD for folding!

Post by Mike_cf »

Hi,

Recently I installed the new 12.11 beta drivers for my HD 7970 and my PPD on the GPU folding has dropped by quite a bit. It is now averaging on 2000 PPD whereas before, it was at around 8000 PPD. I am curious to know if this has happened to anyone else upgrading to these drivers and if so, has anyone by chance have a solution for this issue (short of rolling back drivers)?. My system specs are as follows

CPU: i5 2500k
RAM: 8 GB
GPU: HD 7970
OS: Windows 7
PS: Antec 750w

Thank you for your time.

Did you have any other settings that may have changed?

I guess they're called beta for a reason.

You're not alone.
Some other people have reported a drop in GPU usage.

There was a lot of tweaking with Catalyst 12.11 and the fahcore might have to be recompiled to improve performance (with newer drivers).
I'll look into it further.

How did you install the new drivers - straight over the old ones, after an uninstall, or after uninstalling and using a driver cleaning utility? I had a similar issue with my 7970 after updating from the 12.9 beta with a simple uninstall. I uninstalled 12.11 beta and reinstalled the old version and still saw low PPD, so I uninstalled and then followed it up with running Driver Sweeper in Safe Mode. Rebooted and reinstalled 12.9 beta and my PPD were back to what I expected. I tried again, this time uninstalling and running Driver Sweeper before installing 12.10, and my PPD are still at the normal levels. I might try again with 12.11, but it seems like using Driver Sweeper in between installs is what made the difference for me.

I have no reason to believe the FAHCore or the FAHClient has caused any of these problems nor will it be something that can be fixed in a later client. There are many, many reports on this forum of issues with the HD 7970 and/or with the latest drivers AMD. and it seems likely that we'll have to wait until AMD/ATI resolves those issues. I saw one report where the GPU utilization was reported as 0% with GPU-Z and while it was reported as 44% on msi afterburner

Thanks for the replies. Tried uninstalling and then install again with no success. It seems I will have to wait until AMD resolves this as mentioned above.

12.10 - 12.11 beta drivers - BAD for folding!

Post by Krusher33 »

Over at overclock.net we have a team competition that consists of categories. In the AMD GPU category, several of our members have installed 12.10 on their 5870, 6870, and 7970 GPU's. They started seeing 30-50% GPU usage when folding.

So they tried to do an uninstall, and do a clean re-install of 12.8 drivers... only to still see 50% usage!

I have got the same issue on my HD5870.

Installed 12.11 beta -> 37% usage
Cleaned all the drivers.
Installed -> 10.9 - 11.3 - 11.8 - 12.3 - 12.9

None of these work anymore.

Did you guys use Atiman Uninstaller to try to clear the drivers?

Re-tried 12.11 after an uninstall and cleaning with Treexy's Driver Fusion tool. PPD dropped again, MSI Afterburner reported about 40% GPU usage, GPU-Z reported zero. Uninstalled, ran Driver Fusion to clean things out again, reinstalled 12.10, and PPD are back to the normal range again - Afterburner reports 99% usage now, but GPU-Z still reports 0 (v0.5.8). As long as the PPD are where I'd expect them to be, I'm not worried about what GPU-Z reports though.

A few system specs:

Core i7-860
16GB RAM
Radeon 7970
Windows 8 x64

Atiman uninstaller did the trick. And a couple of guys at overclock.net has narrowed it down to it being related to OpenCL.

They posted some work arounds if you want: http://www.overclock.net/t/1323729/amd- ... ivers/0_50. I'm sticking with 12.8.
