Radeon 7950 not folding. No WUs or problem?

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Radeon 7950 not folding. No WUs or problem?

Post by fredsat »

Hey all,

thanks for your attention. I have been folding a few days now, but I have never managed to have my GPU card fold anything. It seems like it has been recognized by the client, and I've tried different drivers (12.10, 12.11...) always using atiman between an install and the other. I've also tried to run it at stock clocks, but nothing. I can post my latest session log, which seems to show no WU is available for my GPU :( .

I just wanted to make sure that there's no issue with my card or drivers. I am aware of the fact that it might be just that no WU has been created. But before I sit back and wait I want to make sure I did everything I could!

Thank you...

Re: Radeon 7950 not folding. No WUs or problem?

Post by Joe_H »

There are several things going on that could be keeping you from getting WU's for the 7950 over the past few days. But you will have to wait to see if any changes you make will get you a WU, the work server that had work for the ATI cards went down earlier today. See this topic.

As to why the card was not getting work, I am not certain. From the log it is recognized as being on the supported list. But it is possible that no work is currently set to be assigned to it. As for drivers, the latest known to be stable for folding is 12.8. Persons have managed to get installs of later versions to fold, but some extra work is required. One topic where this has been discussed is 12.10-12.11 Drivers. There are some other topics that have discussed this issue, the mentioned topic has links to some workarounds. But to see whether you need to use them, first you have to get a WU assigned and see if it works or not.

One other issue to go over is that the folding core for ATI GPU's uses up to a full core of your CPU to move data in and out of the GPU. So if you do keep folding on your 7950, you should adjust the SMP setting for that slot. Change the SMP setting from -1, the default which uses all cores available, to 3 or 2. 3 is one exception to the message in FAHControl of setting the number to an even number.

If you care about points, you might consider getting a passkey

Hey,

thank you for the prompt answer. I've followed your advice: I put the core usage on the SMP at 3, restarted the client and it finally started to download the task again, although it was not folding. I have then read the indications found here and followed these steps:

1 - I ran two passes (just to be sure), of ATIMan logging as Administrator.

2 - Installed an unofficial 12.11 version of catalyst that uses the 12.8 version of WHQL, found here. I know it's unofficial and installed it at my own risk. It is not the one indicated on the forum page I've posted, but it works.

3 - Installed CAP_2.

4 - Opened F@H Control and now my GPU usage is 99±1%. Also, my PPD is now, after 10 min or so at 27065 instead of 14-15000.

I don't necessarily suggest that AMD users do the same. It worked on my rig though. My configuration is the following:

AsRock Z77-Extreme6
i5-3570K @ 4.5GHz
8GB Ripjaws X 1600
Windows 7 Ultimate
Sapphire HD7950 currently set to 1150/1500 and running great

I will keep using these modified drivers until F@H optimizes the client/WU's to the new ATI drivers (12.11 is still beta). I have no tested them yet on games and other programs. If any issue arises I will post it here.

Thanks again! :D

P.S: got myself a password, thanks for the advice!
