HD 7970 failing

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

HD 7970 failing

Hey all, new to folding here.

Using a 7970, and it keeps failing to fold. Not sure what's going on. Using an i5 3570k, so 4 cores. Put it to 3 so it could feed info to the GPU, still nothing.

- the 7970 is overclocked (although it's quite stable)
- I am using the 13.2 beta drivers for the 7970

Anyone got any ideas?

edit: I think it may be working now. Although for some reason, the PPD seems really low for it. my PPD for it is only 4300 - shouldn't it be higher than that? Although it is using ~90% of the GPU

Folding loads systems more heavily than almost anything else you can run. So even if your overclock is stable in games or benchmarks, it may not be stable for folding. First step that we can recommend is back off your overclock. Second, the latest version of the Catalyst drivers known to be stable is 12.8. People have managed to do modified installs of later versions and get them to fold reliably. But one symptom of issues from later versions is folding only using a fraction of the GPU processing capability. I am moving this topic to the Problems with AMD/ATI drivers forum as the problem is not with the GPU whitelist. There are two long topics there, one on the 12.10-11 version of drivers and the other on 13.1. The second has had some posts from users of the 13.2 beta.

I'm also having some problems falling, I have xfx 7970 Black Edition, I have run at reference stock speeds and overclock speeds and nothing happens. I changed up my drivers from 13.2,13.1,12.8 still the same problems. any ideas?

Consider joining the beta team.

New core 17 runs well on AMD 7970...all current CAT drivers.

Works on Open CL.

If not interesting in joining Beta,

Wait for announcement of new CORE 17. :mrgreen:

Ignore the above comment. Running beta (IE still under testing) is the last thing you would want to do.

Try running these GPU stability tests, MemtestG80 and MemtestCL.

Why run hardware tests to fix a software problem. :?: :lol:

The non-beta core has not run on AMD 7970 (well, at 10% capacity if you are willing to constantly down-grade drivers.) since launch well over a year ago.

There is nothing wrong with his hardware. His card is not defective.

He needs to have proper software support.

It will come when when core 17 launches.

He can run it now if he wants to join the BETA.

If he is not interested in joining Beta testing...his best bet is to wait.

Your car does not run on diesel. Clean out the entire fuel system and try running on the appropriate octane gasoline.

Im running with 13.2 beta 7 drives and mine work fine on the 7.3.6 client. I only had issues when I pushed my over clock.

I'm folding on 2 msi r7970's client v7.3.6 Win 7 64bit AMD driver 13.2 beta 7 custom install uncheck amd app sk 2.8 then installed the older app sk 2.7 after. Added the second 7970 yesterday, one is folding 11292 the other 11293 both with a tpf under 4 min. I used MSI Afterburner to slightly oc the cards from 1010 core 1375 mem to 1050 core 1500 mem and made a fan profile to keep them under 60c . currently under 50c while folding. GPU usage as recorded by afterburner ticks from 68 to 99 percent..so while not perfect it's far from horrible.
Virtual Linux smp 6 as well since the Linux kernel handles the FX8350 scheduling much better than windows.
Either the cards in question are overclocked too far or are overheating or there are remnants of old drivers present.

I can't wait for those new cores to appear :)

The current client has not worked on many cards, with many drivers since launch of the new architecture.
The current client is not designed to work on the new AMD Graphic core next.
The current core does not run at stock. It is not a hardware problem, it is a software problem.

As I posted earlier I''m folding with 2 MSI R7970's now with No issues so it does indeed work. Well outside of the gpu's not pegged at 99% but thats more a limitation of my FX8350.

Sorry, you are mistaken.

Yes, you can get it to run, if you cripple the card by using outdated drivers...the limitation is not your CPU...it is the fact that the software is actually only using a small fraction of the card's compute ability.

When software uses %10 of the hardware, that is a software problem? Yes?

Since we see that Open CL can utilize the card at 100% and actually do 10x the work...there is no debate.

Proper software support will yield better results.

You are free to continue to use software never intended for this card if you want. It will "work" in the sense that you can use an 18 wheeler to deliver a single 1# express package across the country...slow and massively inefficient...but if it makes you happy. :wink:

Otherwise, you can wait, or run the beta... :mrgreen:

Yes, they only have a few examples.

(It is currently running well now, but they intend to continue to push the capability of the core 17, so there is no promise there won't be issues in the future.)
