FAH makes GPU driver fail (official 13.9 and beta 13.11v9.2)

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

If we allow for 1 second difference, then it would coincide with the start-up of FahCore_17:

Code: Select all

12:43:54:WU01:FS00:Starting
12:43:54:WU01:FS00:Running FahCore: "C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient/FAHCoreWrapper.exe" C:/ProgramData/FAHClient/cores/www.stanford.edu/~pande/Win32/AMD64/ATI/R600/Core_17.fah/FahCore_17.exe -dir 01 -suffix 01 -version 703 -lifeline 2364 -checkpoint 15 -gpu 0 -gpu-vendor ati
12:43:54:WU01:FS00:Started FahCore on PID 4380
12:43:54:WU01:FS00:Core PID:3160
12:43:54:WU01:FS00:FahCore 0x17 started
Generally, the GPU frequencies should go up to their 3D values when FahCore_17 starts-up. In your case, it down-clocks to 2D (guessing) and then recovers after that. Haven't seen this behavior before without a driver crash.

I did notice it but it never showed if the Daylight Savings is in-effect or not on my systems. Hence, there can be a +/- 1 hour difference which needs to be confirmed by the donor.

I do not think they intended to support folding on limited function mobility APU chips.
I know that folding will not load a GPU mode on my Z60 tablet because it really isn't a gpu.

Well the GPU on the Z60 can do Dx11 shader 5.0 and OpenCL. Although its processing power is very limited (the C-50 is a lot more limited than the E-450), in theory it should be able to fold (slowly, but fold none the less).

When it comes to iGPUs from AMD, it is a mixed bag. Some of them work once using the latest WHQL Drivers but others don't. I haven't yet found out a pattern for it but if the hardware is similar, then it could boil down to the software.

However, please note that iGPUs aren't really designed for the workload of dGPUs so I won't be surprised if some of these iGPUs can't fold all FahCore_17 WUs within the preferred Deadline. Maybe PG might introduce some smaller projects specifically aimed at the lower-end GPUs which iGPUs can fold.

NForce motherboards with integrated GPUs are not typically whitelisted.
