Folding on AMD Radeon 8610G- Driver Problems

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Folding on AMD Radeon 8610G- Driver Problems

Post by v-raze »

Trying to help my brother out with folding on his laptop- he's been folding with it for a few weeks already but only with the CPU and not the graphics. He has a Dell Inspiron M531R-5535, which uses an AMD A10-5745M APU with Radeon 8610G graphics. This is a reasonably powerful APU for a laptop and he could be making far more PPD if he were able to fold on it, but I can't seem to get it folding properly- whenever I start it, it downloads a work unit, sits there for a minute or so, and then returns a "BAD WORK UNIT" error, without having folded even 0.01% of the WU.

I've tried just about everything I could think of- reinstalling F@H, reinstalling F@H after removing all of the associated data, uninstalling and completely removing the AMD graphics drivers with driversweeper before installing the latest version, removing and re-adding the GPU slot- and nothing has changed it's behavior. I've reached the point where I'm at a complete loss.

I should add that he's running the latest FAHClient, v7.4.4, in a Windows 10 environment.

Now oddly enough, the update to the graphics driver didn't work at all. I've tried every method I could find to update the driver from 15.200.1045.0 to one of the 16.x drivers, and thought I'd finally done it by manually selecting "Update Driver" under the device properties in device manager, as it had shown it was successful and displayed the new driver installed as being that version, but now it's shoowing 15.2 again. My driver issues may be the cause of the folding problem. Any insights?

Here's the log, showing the GPU attempting to fold a work unit and failing before I paused and removed the slot. If I leave it going it will just download another WU and fail again, exactly the same way. The CPU works fine and you can see it starting to fold at the end of the log.

Does anyone else have a suggestion on how I might get this laptop folding on the GPU slot?

Re: Folding on AMD Radeon 8610G- Driver Problems

Post by Joe_H »

When the GPU failed other WU's besides the one shown in this log, is the error the same "14:41:05:WU00:FS01:0x21:ERROR:NaNs detected in forces. 0 0"? If there weer different errors reported, please post relevant sections of the logs. Often a "NaN" error indicates a problem with the WU, but since there is only the one failure report in the database it is not possible to tell yet if the WU is bad.

The 2nd GPU WU was dumped because the folding slot was deleted, it had not been processed at all to give an error.

As for drivers, usually you will need to download them from AMD-ATI's site, the ones supplied through Windows update often are lacking resources needed for folding. This can be a problem with some laptops as only some driver downloads are usable or you need to use the OEM drivers provided through the laptop manufacturer. At a minimum, the driver installation also need to include support for OpenCL.

Finally, while powerful for an integrated GPU , the 8610G might not be fast enough to process WU's within the deadlines. And since it is integrated into the CPU chip, heat generated by the GPU doing continuous WU processing will count towards the TDP thermal dissipation limit. So it may cause the CPU chip to downclock to stay within that limit.

Re: Folding on AMD Radeon 8610G- Driver Problems

When the GPU failed other WU's besides the one shown in this log, is the error the same "14:41:05:WU00:FS01:0x21:ERROR:NaNs detected in forces. 0 0"?
Thanks for the timely response! Yes, it's always the same error, forgot to mention that. I deleted the slot right after that because I didn't want to mess up his stats with more failed WUs.
I was attempting to use the drivers straight from AMD. When I thought I'd had it working was when I installed the AMD driver by going into device properties, selecting to update the driver, and selecting to locate the driver manually, and then pointing windows at the driver I'd downloaded from AMD. I hadn't yet tried getting drivers straight from Dell- I can give it a shot and see if it goes any differently.

I do understand the limitations of a mobile APU for folding, but if you can still fold on a GT 120 you should be able to fold on this well enough. I expect I may have to disable CPU folding and only fold on the iGPU to maintain thermal stability, but he can also get an aftermarket cooling solution if needed. I can certainly figure out all of that if I can just get the iGPU folding in the first place. I'll try using the drivers from Dell and let you know if anything changes.

I understand the thinking, but the GT 120 is a card that no longer can be used for folding. The last work this pre-Fermi card could process ran out several months ago, and the original projects meant for that era card ran out nearly 2 years ago. Currently the minimum usable nVidia GPU is from the GT 400 series, and the slower cards from that group are not fast enough to complete within timelimits.

Using the Microsoft installer is probably your problem. Consult the ATI/AMD site for instructions.

Note: Unless you disable Microsoft's automatic updating of drivers, sooner or later they'll replace the ones provided by the manufacturer, simultaneously disabling the OpenCL portions of the drivers and killing FAH.

NOTE: Despite the similarity of the name, OpenGL is not required when running FAH's client. (It may be useful for other programs.)

Really? My friend's been folding on his GT 120 for a few months now, last I checked it was still fine. I can double check with him though. You got what I meant anyways.

As I said, I didn't use the microsoft installer. I've not used the microsoft installer at all, or attempted to. I tried multiple times using the AMD installer, and also tried once manually updating the driver to the one I'd downloaded from AMD using device manager. I will try using the Dell driver & installer next though.

Have you tried running FAHBench to confirm OpenCL is working as intended? Try each of the three WU options with NaN checks disabled and every 10 steps.

I have a desktop 65W Kaveri A8 7600 APU. 384 shaders @ 720MHz produces 10-12K PPD and has no problems finishing before the timeout. Folding on the iGPU throttles the CPU from 3.1GHz (3.6Ghz boost) to a continuous 2.4GHz. As a result, the CPU slot using 2 threads produces around 1400PPD. The GPU slot generates 7x more PPD.

However you are comparing a desktop APU to a laptop model. The 2.1 GHz, 25W A10-5745M APU is running the 8610G at 533 MHz. With a TDP of only 25W, it will reach thermal limits under much less load and may need to throttle back more.

It's a VLIW4 based GPU, and we have seen some reports that some WUs can't run on this (my 6950 is affected) ... you can confirm this by trying to run FAHBench (latest version) on it. If one of the WU types available (NAV if my memories are correct) fails, then you're in the category that won't be able to run some projects. :(

Can you supply the necessary information about which GPUs and which WU-types are affected? It would be nice if the servers could be configured to NOT assign those WU-types to those GPUs -- unless it is, in fact, a driver problem and there's still hope that there will be a fix soon.

No, since this is an old GPU that I used again as a replacement (between a R9 290X and a 980 Ti), I didn't bother try it more.

In FAHBench, "dhfr" and "dhfr-implicit" where OK, but "nav" was not working ... that's why it's a good test to determine whether a GPU is affected or not.

Don't expect any update, cards based on VLIW architectures went EOL and won't receive any driver updates. 15.7.1 are the latest drivers with proper OpenCL support built in that will work on these cards.

Only GCN based GPUs are now supported.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I guess the thing to do is update to 15.7 drivers and give FAHBench a try. Sorry to hear the hardware's probably not fully supported anymore though. Kind of too bad that there's still all that processing power not being leveraged, I'm sure there are plenty of people still running the 6000 series GPUs. They're still capable of max settings at 720p for gaming and they'll easily max out games like League of Legends or DOTA 2 at higher resolutions.

Pande Group has always made an effort to support older hardware as long as feasibly possible when many other programs only support the current version, and one previous version.

Windows XP is coming up on its 15 year anniversary and is only just now becoming a liability for folding, and only for GPUs. Still works well for CPU folding.

But the crushing wheel of obsolescence continues to roll on.

I actually have the same problem, I actually run FAh on an HP Probook 651 Generation 1, made in 2015.

As far as I know, your Radeon 8610G should not be listed as supported for folding. Is is from a generation of integrated GPUs as part of APUs sold by AMD that did not include support for doing double precision calculations (FP64). In addition AMD has limited full OpenCL support in newer drivers to more recent GPUs that the Terascale based ones like the 8610G.

If you can provide the PCI device ID number I can check the listing in GPUs.txt and have it corrected.
