Seeking advise on new AMD GPU

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Seeking advise on new AMD GPU

Postby Mactin » Tue Jan 23, 2018 3:54 pm

I am looking to upgrade my mid-range GPU.

I currently have an AMD HD7790 that delivers about 35K PPD.
I live in Québec and electricity in very cheep (and 99% renewable hydro).

What is the difference PPD wise with
1) RX550 and RX560 ?
2) 2GB vs 4GB ?
3) Any other advise, I confess that I have at this time a big preference towards AMD for this machine.

Thanks for the help

This table can help you. VRAM amount is not important for folding but if you want to sell the GPU later.

If electricity is not important than older generation GPUs may be cheaper to buy.

The RX 550 will generate less than half the PPD of the 560.
RX 550 ~= 1.1 GFLOPS
RX 560 ~= 2.4 GFLOPS

My ranking of the GPUs in this price range would be as follows:
1. RX 560 2GB dedicated to FAH / 4GB if gaming
2. RX 460 2GB dedicated to FAH / 4GB if gaming
3. RX 550 2GB
4. RX 550 4GB

Wouldn't an nvidia based 1060 or 1070, depending on budget, give better bang for buck in terms of PPD?

Even GTX1050 2Gb is better than 550/560, produsing more than 100k ppd

&ikek and @boristsybin in the OP a strong preference for an AMD card was expressed. The reason was not given, but could be for compatibility with other usage of the computer, so you pushing nVidia is not responsive to the needs expressed. Sure, the cards you mentioned might be better for folding, but that is just a single parameter on which to make a choice.

Mentioning what GPU the OP currently has and his preference for AMD does not exclude him/her asking for input (OP under point 3 any other advice). Is it also wrong to mention that nvidia currently is better than amd? Better watt/ppd , cost/ppd and so forth.

I am in fault for reading 550/560 as 570/580 and probably put up somewhat more costly alternatives on the nvidia side of things. Regarding the amd series, from what I can remember regarding the 570/580 at least they are more or less the same as the 400 series cards which means warrants some research into the 400 series vs 500 series. Perhaps a 400 series card is cheaper than its equivalent 500 series card and has about the same performance.

I have a 1050ti (my first nVidia GPU in a LONG time!) in one rig, and an RX460 in another. They both pull about the same power, and they cost around the same (but with a 1-year time delay), but the 1050ti gives twice the PPD (~200K vs ~100K).

IF you can find a 460 today, the only advantage is that you can find fanless versions...

Hello;

I have an Strix 3 fan R9 390 with 8GB that gets about 220K - 250K PPD and paid 220 US$ about a year ago.

It's a bit old and uses about 200-250 Watts with a mild OC. I have a pref for AMD now because I went with a FreeSync ultrawide for my main monitor. so any GPU upgrades from here will need take that into consideration. Unless Nvidia somehow decides to also support Freesync I won't be entertaining the idea.

Just my situation.
