AMD RX570 Constantly Sending/Downloading Incomplete WU

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

AMD RX570 Constantly Sending/Downloading Incomplete WU

I just started again and on my ASUS RX570, it keeps on downloading and sending WU that are 0% complete. When it tries to download a WU, it takes forever to obtain one too, but that's probably due to the Stanford team running out of WU to distribute. Is there a way to find out what's wrong? I'm on 20.2.2 drivers.

Running out of WUs is not the same issue as slow downloads. Some servers may be saturating their network connection or maybe their disk drive channel because of too many requests for concurrent WU transfers.

Is your system unstable or your GPU overheated? Retruning a WU after processing 0% is just as likely to overload the server as completing it. We need to figure out why your system is dumping WUs. If the WU is then reissued to somebody else does it fail on another system or can other people complete the same WU? Defective system or defective WU?

I'm not a new user onto the forums or Folding. This was the log I could get from the program and all I could copy. I've been in and out of Folding for like 10 years or more now.

My computer is stable. Temps are 65C max on both CPU and GPU. Drivers are the latest from AMD as well.

You can see more of the log in the client window by hitting Refresh. That loads the log from the beginning, and lets you get to the first 200 lines mentioned as being very useful.

Bruce's signature is a link to a topic that includes how to find the actual log file, it can be opened in a text editor, just don't modify the active log and save it in the same location.

It seems to be working normally now. According to my history on Extreme Overclocking, I'm getting over 50k points with each WU. Must have been some initial glitch? I didn't change any settings.

I see just one download there, and the WU got to 4% and was paused. When it was restarted it went back to the beginning because it had not reached its first checkpoint. From the information I have I don't know how frequently the checkpoint is written, but I suspect it might be every 5%.

The checkpoint frequency for GPU WU's is set by the researchers, it depends on the project and what intermediate data needs to be collected. That is written out and collected up at the end to be returned with the WU.

There is a checkpoint setting within the client, but that only applies to WU's processed by the A7 CPU folding core.

So I was right. There is something wrong with my computer. But the GPU is running at default speeds so what could be wrong? It's not overheating either. I upgraded to the latest AMD drivers last night and it was folding fine before I Went to bed.

Someone else looked at this kind of error, it appears from their research that there is a limit set in the AMD OpenCL support that may be causing problems if the size of the WU exceeds some large number of atoms. This will need to be checked into, it is not clear whether this just applies to some version of the drivers, is actually the problem, and so on. The projects running into this error may get restricted from assignments to AMD GPU's at some point, a report was passed on to the F@h group. Or the fix might be something else, too soon to be more definite.

I'm having this issue as well, but I don't think there's any workaround other than disabling/pausing your GPU; on the other hand, besides causing some unnecessary traffic overhead, at least the WUs should be reassigned to someone else nearly instantly (since these fail instantly on affected clients). The WUs affected seems to be with 165,550 atoms or more (see this thread viewtopic.php?f=74&t=32991 ), so most WUs out there are fine, although I have seen my affected GPU being assigned problematic WUs up to 3 times in a row.

This has been escalated to the OpenMM team but my guess is that a fix won't be available soon.

Give me the project number(s) and your GPU description and we can block future assignments of that/those project(s) to your class of GPUs.

The fundamental problem, as I see it, is that AMD used the same hardware ID code for a wide(?) variety of different GPUs. Even the RX 590 is identified as identical.
