problems with amd ryzen 1700

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

problems with amd ryzen 1700

Post by nuty111 »

Hi i have ryzen 1700 (8 core 16 threads 3.8ghz) it works fine for a minute but then just freezes and i have to restart PC. I did some testing to be sure its not processors fault and my overclocking so im pretty sure that's client side error. Also FAHcontrol does not recognize my pc it just says `CPU 15' instead of its name. I tried some mining before as well and it worked well.

The clients don't identify any of my CPUs either. I think that they don't actually care what model CPU you have, just how many threads you can run (which in your case is 15).

You should post your log file, there might be some useful error messages in there. Sure sounds like overheating to me, but it could be something else.

First guess
* FAH expects to run continuously at 100% cpu so can generate a lot of heat. That may be more than your fan can dissipate. As it heats up, the machine shuts down to prevent if from being damaged by the temperature rise. Mining also runs at 100% CPU but it generally doesn't generate as much heat.

Is the folding power slider set to Full, Medium, or Light?

Near the bottom of the System Info tab, what does it say about GPUs.

GPUS are fine. the only thing it does not find as much jobs ... i have rx 580 and then the log says :
'`13:30:13:WARNING:WU01:FS01:Failed to get assignment from '18.218.241.186:80': No WUs available for this configuration``

now CPU does not overheat as i sayd earlier ive tested the temps voltage and put it on stress test was no errors. so my screen just freezes on 10% of job done any ideas how to fix this?
here is the full log

Re: problems with amd ryzen 1700

Post by Roadpower »

I would look at F@H as a stress test, if your system is consistently failing on it you have found a stress test that has exposed an issue. IE your other stress test is not exposing the issue while F@H is. In my case I pretty poor at figuring my way around a *nix system and because of this I have had no success getting my RX480 working for F@H and frankly I have given up trying. However my Ryzen3700X works fine, it just rarely gets jobs to do because most of the WU's don't want a CPU, they want a GPU.

(Just for clarity I switched to *nix around the turn of the year because of support for Windows Seven was discontinued and I will NOT under any circumstance use Windows 10. So while I'm a long time computer hobbyist, I'm not competent for the meat and bones of a *nix platform)

Back to the 3700X. I'm a very long time PC builder, some of the things I've always banged on about was stress testing during the build and system stability is first and foremost. Because of this mindset and experience I do not overclock and I do everything I can to keep heat at the lowest possible levels. So last week when the Prism cooler allowed the 3700X to get to 168F (or about 78C) during folding I immediately ordered a better (Noctua) cooler. Keep in mind that these temps are well below AMD's documented limit of 95C. I however do not want thermal cycling that comes anywhere near thermal limits.

Another thing to keep in mind that stress tests can also expose a poor or under spec'd PSU. Admittedly much more likely with a GPU under load than a CPU under load. From what I understand of your case you should probably experiment with default (not overclocked) settings or small voltage adjustments.
