unstable GPU work load (RX460, RX470)

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

unstable GPU work load (RX460, RX470)

Post by SBPDreamer87 »

Hi everyone,
I noticed that my GPUs have unstable load (when in use)
In case of RX470 I did downvolt in MSI afterburner (about -120mV)
Now I have this, which is better than it used to be, but still not like CPU load..
Image

It's worse with RX460
First it looked like this:

I lowered the frequency (MHz): 1212 -> 1160
It became a little bit better but still..

So.. Maybe someone knows what can be done, what numbers I should try?
Thanks!

Welcome to the F@H Forum SBPDreamer87,

Can you please post your log file. Ensure that you have copied the System configuration which is present at the start of the log file (viewtopic.php?f=81&t=26036). Can you please try folding on your GPU without any overclock/undervolt/etc?

It is expected that you do not get a constant load at 100% but more around 95% with drops. Maybe you can increase the power limit for your GPU and improve case cooling? Hope you are not running on x1 risers which bottleneck on Windows.

Graph looked like this:

Without any overclock/undervolt I didn't notice the difference, that's why I tried undervolt - at least lower the temperature..
But I'm still looking for the "perfect" numbers for my cards
e.g. this log file and graph: -118 undervolt and 1236 mHZ

foldy wrote:It is expected that you do not get a constant load at 100% but more around 95% with drops
So that graph looks ok?
Why the CPU graph looks "better'?
foldy wrote:Maybe you can increase the power limit for your GPU and improve case cooling?
I'll try with the power limit but how many percent do I need to add?
foldy wrote:Hope you are not running on x1 risers which bottleneck on Windows.
No, I don't use them.
So you can use them in mining but to use them here is bad idea?

***
Also I noticed that MEDIUM mode works better than FULL mode
I checked it on 2 different computers with RX460 and RX470

Re: unstable GPU work load (RX460, RX470)

Post by PantherX »

It seems to me that you're having a CPU bottleneck issue. I shall assume that you're using this system on a daily basis too. If that's the case, Change the CPU value from 3 to 2 since that's what Medium did. Alternatively, you can test by finishing the CPU WU (right-click the CPU Slot and select Finish) and see how your system behaves without any CPU folding, including the GPU usage.

The general guide is to optimize your system for the highest PPD since it means that you're doing more science.

It means that CPU is not able to process all data from the GPU and we see these drops?

Yeah, I tried to "off" the cpu, close all other applications - doesn't look different..
It reacts to changing voltage and frequency (more or less drops )
PantherX wrote: Change the CPU value from 3 to 2 since that's what Medium did
Okay, I'll try that, by default I have -1 for both CPU and GPU

About upgrade - is there some table which shows what CPUs and GPUs perform better for our goal?

A GPU needs to be constantly feed with data. That's done by the CPU. If the CPU is interrupted, the GPU would "starve" which causes the drop in GPU usage. Your picture above which shows the difference between Full and Medium would be an indicator that your GPU was starving a bit by running 3 CPU for folding.
SBPDreamer87 wrote:...Yeah, I tried to "off" the cpu, close all other applications - doesn't look different...
Some applications can continue to run in the background even though you "closed" it. Other applications run in the background or have services which can use CPU cycles.
SBPDreamer87 wrote:...About upgrade - is there some table which shows what CPUs and GPUs perform better for our goal?...
There's no official table, just results from many donors posting stats. If you want to discuss your hardware, here's a good starting point: viewforum.php?f=38

That server (and others) are under massive load: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=33193
If you leave it as is, it will eventually upload once the server gets a bit of breathing room.

Now I understand the concept, thanks
And with CPU value = 2 graph looks better but still with drops

PantherX wrote:Other applications run in the background or have services which can use CPU cycles.
Even if CPU load is less than 15-20%? What would you suggest in that case?

Thanks. I saw smth there but unfortunately incomplete
I think we should create table like that:)

I see.
When I googled the problem I saw some info that if it takes longer than 3 days it becomes expired and no longer useful
In my case I got this:

Code: Select all

06:53:54:WU01:FS01:Server responded WORK_QUIT (404)
06:53:54:WARNING:WU01:FS01:Server did not like results, dumping

You have 4 CPUs thus 25% is 1 CPU. Assuming you fold on 4 CPUs, 10% constant usage would mean that 1 CPU will always be about 50% slower than the other 3 CPUs. But since folding needs to be synced across all 4 CPUs, the other 3 CPUs wait for the slow CPU to catchup. Now, if we fold on 3 CPUs, they operate at full speed since the 1 CPU which is free is dealing with other requests allowing the 3 CPUs to be focused on folding.

Each system and OS is different so what I can suggest is that you experiment. Change the number of CPUs in that CPU Slot and note down the TPF (Time Per Frame) after at least 5% change. Compare them and see which setup has the lowest TPF. Since your CPU count is low (less than 5), you can do this all on the same WU. Do note that you might loose some work between the pause and unpause but if you spend a bit of time (say an hour) you will know the best setup for folding on your system and then it's a set-and-fold system :)

Now I understand things better, thanks PantherX!
Good point about TPF, I didn't pay attention to it.

About experiments. I also have system with Q6600 and R9 270X
(I tried to overclock Q6600, I got 3GHz and temperature about 60 degrees under 100% load (I used tower cooler) but some elements on MB (R50) were really hot (maybe it's okay?), so I had to set CPU to 2.5GHz just in case. )
Anyway I got an interesting result with this set - smooth GPU load graph but no more than 86-92% . But stable. Even if Q6600 is folding:
Image

Thus my assumption is that I5 2400 can't 100% handle the RX460, same thing with I5 4440 and RX470
But Q6600 can handle R9 270X (not 100% load but at least stable load)
So.. for RX460 and RX470 we need more powerful CPUs ?

What are the PCIE slots in which the GPUs are installed running at?

AFAIK, paring a high end GPU with a low end CPU may cause a slight drop in points. Also, the bottleneck of PCIE is achieved faster in Windows and in Linux.

Okay, so I have 3 configurations at the moment
1) ASRock Z87 Extreme3 + I5 4440 + RX470 ( PCI-E x16 slot is using for GPU)
2) Asus P8H61-M LX R2.0 + I5 2400 + RX460 ( PCI-E x16 slot is using for GPU)
3)Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2C v1 + Q6600 + R9 270X ( PCI-E x16 slot is using for GPU)

The last one is the most stable (I uploaded the graph)
I overclocked Q6600, it worked ok at 3 GHz, but elements near the CPU (R50, I don't really know what is it) were super hot, so I decided to stay at 2.5 GHz
PantherX wrote:AFAIK, paring a high end GPU with a low end CPU may cause a slight drop in points.
Yeah, it looks like that..
Also I don't think RX460 and RX470 are really high end GPUs
And I really thought that 2400 and 4440 were kind of between low and high
