Ubuntu PPD half of Win10 PPD?

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Ubuntu PPD half of Win10 PPD?

I have been trying to switch to linux as my main OS. Getting F@H running has been my last major hurdle. I finally got things up and running, only to discover half the PPD of Windows on 12.3.2 drivers. My CPU PPD goes up from 150k to 170k, but gpu is down from ~2million to ~1million. I let it run for a couple days, and then just boot win 10 again. On 18202, tpf windows, 2 min 3sec. tpf linux, 3 min 55 sec.

To be honest, I'm not sure where to start looking on this. Any ideas?

Ryzen 5 3600 (only folding on 8 threads)
Radeon 6700xt

My experience with AMD OpenCL folding on Linux has been that, performance changes drastically with each release of the driver. Some minor updates completely broke GPU folding for me and I had to roll back. I eventually settled on ROCm 4.1.0 (OpenCL-only install) and locked to that version. It has been stable on my CentOS 8.3 system for the past few of months. You can also try older versions of amdbpu-pro from before the OpenCL component was provided by ROCm.

Use caution following this advice. I have a dual-boot system that, on one partition, is dedicated to Folding@home and does not need to be kept up-to-date. The general purpose system is on a completely separate partition (and kernel) that does not interfere with folding when it is updated. If you are folding on a general purpose system, it may be preferable to keep the AMD drivers updated.

Thanks for the confirmation. 6700xt support means I am limited to the most recent releases of amdgpu-pro;

all of which use the ROCr implementation. I could try them one by one, but I hate the idea of starting a WU and waiting 6+ hours for it to finish just to troubleshoot, and I'm hesitant to pause F@H and change drivers in the middle of a WU. I guess it might be worth trying.

I think I'll try ROCm 4.2 next. You said you had only OpenCL installed, but I didn't see that spelled out in amd's installation guide. Did I miss something?

I know it's outdated but you could take a look at FAHBench to a least give an idea of relative performance between different drivers without spoiling live work units.

To get OpenCL-only on CentOS, I set up the ROCm repository and explicitly installed `rock-dkms` and `rocm-opencl-devel4.1.0`. I also installed `rocminfo4.1.0`, since it often behaves a bit differently than `clinfo`. You may also have to create some symlinks and run `ldconfig`:
