Please add this GPU to the whitelist

Post by Felipe_MF »

Hello,

I have an AMD GPU which is not on the whitelist. The FAH client still recognizes a GPU but it's not the correct one.
According to GPU-Z, my GPU's info is:
Name: AMD Radeon R9 M275X
Device ID: 1002 6820 - 17AA 3801

The client says my GPU is an AMD Radeon HD 8800M Series, which is incorrect, and even though it is actually folding, the task manager says "GPU usage 0%", and it folds very slowly.

Hope you can add this GPU to the whitelist.
I'm attaching the log file.

Thank you.

Welcome to the folding support forum.

Your card is already present in the GPUs.txt file, and the entry is unlikely to be modified. It shows up like this:

Code: Select all

0x1002:0x6820:1:5:[Radeon HD 8800M Series]
The part actually used by the folding client is based on the device ID shown at the beginning of the line, the manufacturer and type are the next fields. The text portion after the last colon is merely cosmetic, it does not affect how the client folds.

The reason it is unlikely to be modified is due to the way AMD assigns device ID's and reuse the same GPU chips across series of cards. The HD 8000 series were mostly OEM cards reusing GPU chips from the HD 7000 series, then when sold at retail the same chips were used in the Rx 200 series. The text entry would become too cumbersome if all of the different models that share the same ID and chips were listed. The entry in the file dates from when the device ID was first used.

From your log the GPU appears to be processing the WU. Depending on your settings, the client may be only doing GPU folding when your system is Idle, thus anytime you try to check it will pause folding on the GPU. There might be either issues that others can comment on.

Welcome to Folding!

Here is some background on the GPU which is related to the 8800M but clocked faster.
It is a modern GPU supporting GCN instructions and OpenCL 1.2
It will be slow but should Fold.

In your log, I see evidence that you are starting at 17%, did you have a previous GPU?

Task Manager does not monitor GPU activity ... GPU-Z does.

Very slowly compared to what?
The M series are not especially powerful GPUs compared to desktop models where wall-power is assumed. Mobile GPU chips are designed to minimize battery drain while providing adequate 2D video performance. The trade offsare generally limitations in the speed of their 3D calculations -- prized by FAH donors as well as gamers.

Thanks to everyone for your answers. I’ll try to address everything in order.

I have been using FAH for years now, mostly on and off, depending on my jobs. Currently, I have the opportunity to turn it on in the morning when I get to work and off when I leave. I have always been capable of folding with both my CPU and my GPU (at least with the one it recognizes) using this same computer.

Thank you Joe_H for the information regarding my GPU. I was confused by the fact that I found on the whitelist a Radeon R9 M295X and mine is R9 M275X, which is why I thought it was not added. I understand your point now.

When I mentioned that my task manager shows 0% of the GPU being used while folding is because the task manager is the first thing to load on my computer when I turn it on and I keep it open only showing the performance graphs in a corner of the screen, so that I know how many resources I have available in case I need to do some CPU or RAM intense operations. The last two graphs that I see are my GPU 0 (Integrated card) and my GPU 1 (R9 M275X). Whenever I watch any sort of animation, video, movie, etc., on my pc, either one or both GPU graphs spike. Since the folding process is supposed to be using my GPU, I thought I would see actual usage of the GPU on those graphs, like every time I open any application. This was the second hint about the FAH Client not recognizing my video card correctly.

To answer JimboPalmer’s question, I started folding that particular work unit that same days a few hours before I registered that log; so, no, I did not have a previous GPU, it was folding using the same one I have always had.

Now bruce, my Task manager under the “Performance” tab shows my CPU, RAM, Disk, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, GPU 0 and GPU 1 performance. Those graphs are constantly changing and I am constantly monitoring them because I tend to have high disk usage issues, which I like to solve quickly in order to avoid longer periods of slow performance. Thanks to that, I discovered that my Video Card driver was not working correctly a few months ago. Now my GPU does work as it should, with everything else, but with the FAH Client it’s just not the way I’m used to.

Now, when I said “it folds slowly”, I was referring to the comparison between my CPU and my GPU performance. Usually, for a job that I have been assigned to do with my CPU in 12 days, it normally takes about 10 hours or so to finish, but for those jobs assigned to do with my GPU, I have around 4 days and the entire process takes about 1.5 days, which are about 36 hours, meaning that sometimes I cannot finish them on time and the system ends up giving me another job when I’m 80% through. I’m not sure if that is normal, but it feels like a waste of time when it happens.

Anyway, I think my original request about adding my video card to the whitelist is meaningless now, given that the software is already recognizing my GPU the way it should; so, thank you for the feedback and the information. I’ll keep folding the way I have been doing.
