returning to folding, problems with 680?

Post by nuttcase21 »

i just started folding again and i'm having a few issues. first of all i'm running the latest v7 and my cpu is folding fine (3930k, 12 cores all @ 100%) but my gpu isn't folding a thing. i downloaded the latest GPUs.txt file and installed it in the data folder. started the client and like i said, i get the cpu to fold, but nothing for the gpu. looked on the forums here and found the device id needs changed for the 680. so i closed the client, changed the 680's device id line in the GPUs.txt file, saved it, and then restarted the client and still nothing. looking at the "folding slots" window in the client shows that the gpu is running, but the device name is still GF114, not the GK104 i changed it to. any suggestions? here's the log:

changed the 680's device id line in the GPUs.txt file
The system doesn't work that way. The device ids have to be added to the GPUs.txt file that's on the server. Please post the ids here as explained in viewtopic.php?f=83&t=21205 .

i figured some of it out after i posted the thread. i now understand that the gpus.txt file needs to be copied and pasted into the data folder, but also, the servers file needs to be updated as well. thats why it's still showing GF114 in the id line for the client (its getting that info from the server). i ended up using the beta command and it's working now, but i'm assuming at a slower ppd until the server gets straightened out, am i correct?

The new beta V7.2.9 eliminates the need to manually copy/paste GPUs.txt but the server file still needs to be updated.

The beta command is a temporary work-around so plan on discontinuing that practice unless you plan to actively participate in beta testing. I'm sure you'll hear about the change when it happens. PPD should not change either way.

I have this problem as well running a new, clean installation of V7.2.9, windows version. I have been using the beta command to run my two 680s as Fermi for quite some time without problems but this shouldn't be necessary any more, I understand? However, after cleaning up previous installations and starting from scratch FAHClient insists that I have two "NVIDIA:2 GF114 [GeForce GTX 680]" in my system.

The Windows Device Manager identifies the cards as "PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1180" and GPUs.txt says "0x10de:0x1180:2:3:GK104 [GeForce GTX 680]" and still, when I run "FAHClient.exe --lspci" it says:

VendorID:DeviceID:Vendor Name:Description
0x10de:0x0e0a:NVIDIA Corporation:High Definition Audio-styrenhet
0x10de:0x0e0a:NVIDIA Corporation:High Definition Audio-styrenhet
0x10de:0x1180:NVIDIA Corporation:GF114 [GeForce GTX 680]
0x10de:0x1180:NVIDIA Corporation:GF114 [GeForce GTX 680]

I've been searching for any possible remnants of previous installations that may mess this up but can't find any. I don't understand why my cards would be identified as GF114.

Ideas, anybody?

When you installed 7.2.9, did you retain the setup and data from a previous install? There has been reports of similar problems after an update to install 7.2.9 that required deleting the slot and recreating it for the GPU. Also delete your local copy of GPUs.txt to cause a new download to be certain the current one is there.

Thanks for helping, Joe!

After I first got this problem I uninstalled everything FAH and checked that all the files and directories were gone. Then I scanned the hard drive for GPUs.txt and even for any file on the whole drive containing the string "GF114", including the registry. Nothing. Installed again, started, and checked the new downloaded GPUs.txt which looked fine. Still FAHClient insisted on my card being Fermi.

I must have missed something but I have run out of things to try. Except formatting the hard drive, I guess, but I'm not that frustrated. Yet.

My 680 (EVGA Superclocked+) is also being detected as GF114. I'm using 7.2.9 and just deleted GPUs.txt followed by a client restart. Having said that, it appears to be folding fine (and generating a TON of PPD).

I'm on a new Windows 8 x64 install, using the 310.70 drivers.

That's difficult to understand since
1) The current version on the server says 0x10de:0x1180:2:3:GK104 [GeForce GTX 680]
2) V7.2.9 should automatically download the latest version.
3) Maybe you have more that one copy of GPUs.txt. If you find a copy that says GF104, feel free to manually replace that copy with the one I linked in item 1.

My copy says GK104, and I only have one copy. Everywhere I've looked in the client and GPU slot log references GF114 for the video card though. Perhaps a bug in the client?

There was a typo in GPUs.txt back in early November but that was fixed.

Try the following:

1. Pause your slots and Quit FAHControl
2. If you normally start FAHClient before FAHControl you will have a FAHClient dos-like screen ... ctrl-c to end it.
3. Click on Start>All Programs>FAHClient>Data Directory
4. Right click on GPUs or GPUs.txt and select delete
5. Start up folding in your usual way

If it doesn't show GK104 in the log after doing the above the only other suggestion I've seen is to Finish the GPU slot and Remove and Add it back. That may be your solution. Perhaps when you first added your GPU slot you had the file with the typo and your GPU was initially identified as a GF114 and even updating the file might not 'fix' that without removing the slot and adding it back.

Perhaps your copy of GPUs.txt is not located in the proper place. As bollix47 has said, there was a typo in an earlier version of GPUs.txt and it did say GF114.

Stop FAHClient as suggested above. Restart FAHClient using the shortcut that the FAH installer put in All_Programs, creating the DOS-like window. Allow it to run long enough to confirm whether it says GK or GF. Type CTRL-C to stop FAHClient but do not close the DOS window. Type dir and confirm that GPUs.txt is present. Note the date of the file.

Type more<GPUs.txt which will display the file, one page at a time. (Press space to advance to the next page.) On or near page 68, you'll find the 680. (They're in order by the 0x10de:0x1180 part.)

Delete the file with del GPUs.txt. Restart FAHClient using the same shortcut.

I installed Windows on my PC on December 10th, with a fresh install of F@H at that time. I just deleted GPUs.txt a second time and watched it get recreated, the client still lists GF114. I'm not too concerned about it as it's folding fine for me. I opened the file and verified that the card is listed in there (0x10de:0x1180:2:3:GK104 [GeForce GTX 680]).

I have the same issue, client lists GF114. However, I've been having nothing but problems the last few weeks, and I wonder if this is somehow related? Seems that some projects fold fine, others come up with "unstable machine" and/or early end. I really don't think it's my hardware, because I just spent a week running benchmarks and had no issues at all (all very good scores in fact). I thought maybe it was updating the driver when 310.70 became WHQL, but to try and narrow it down I just did a fresh install of Windows today and used the driver I was using before. I'm kind of at my wits end here.
