Upgraded from v6 -> v7; no longer can use GPU

I recently moved from version 6 to version 7 of the folding@home software, and I can no longer use my GPU. I have a GeForce 9300. It worked fine with v6. I never had a problem with it. Now I can't even set up a slot for the GPU. Whenever I try to add it, I get a message from FAHControl that says I have no GPU.

With v6 you could force the client to use your GPU but with v7 it needs to detect your video card and you can't force it.

Your GPU is not being detected at all. What Nvidia driver version are you using? It may be necessary to update your drivers to something more recent.

If we can't get it to see your video card, it may be necessary to go back to v6.

P.S. For some reason there are two CPU slots. Did you add one, if so please remove it so that there is only one. It should be more productive. This is independent to the above GPU problem.

I don't know anything about forcing. I just installed the GPU client with v6 and it worked. I didn't have to do anything special. I am using an older version of the Nvidia drivers (260.99), but this satisfies the requirements according to the web site:
-CUDA supported GPU (8xxx series and above), see full list
-26x.xx NV device driver or newer (285.xx and 301.xx are known stable versions)

My GPU is listed in the GPUs.txt file, and the system log shows that the CUDA driver is detected. So I'm not sure why the GPU itself is not being detected. The only thing I can think of is that the Display adapter shows up as "NVIDIA GeForce 9300 / nForce 730i" in the Device Manager. I don't know if this has to match the text exactly in GPUs.txt.

When I first installed v7, only one of my CPUs was being used. The other one was always idle. I installed another slot so both are being used now.

Version 7 has a couple of requirements when using Windows XP.

Do you have .net and c++ installed as stated in the above link?

As far as identification use gpu-z. It will give you the GPU's id info which you can use when checking GPUs.txt.

There are 9 different 9300's included in the WhiteList but who's to say if they missed the 10th one.

Is the 9300 being used to drive your monitor or do you have more than one video device?

The device ID from gpu-z is 10DE-086C. Name is the same as I stated before: NVIDIA GeForce 9300 / nForce 730i.

The 9300 is being used to drive my monitor. It is the only video device in my system.

Since that device ID is not listed in the newest GPUs.txt file, it looks like your card is the 11th variant on the 9300. I did check each of the 10 existing entries and there was no match. Could you post the full output of gpu-z or FAHClient --lspci? That will give the information needed to add the card to the whitelist.

The documentation of the file is located on the V7 Client wiki, Format of GPUs.txt. Once the device ID for your card is added and propagated to the servers, then your V7 installation should be able to create a GPU folding slot. In the meantime, you can run a V6 GPU client alongside the V7 client if you want.

Unfortunately I have deleted my V6 directories after shutting down the clients to upgrade to V7. So I don't have any of my logs. I didn't have any issues getting and completing projects with the GPU. I think I was getting around 500 PPD, but I don't remember for sure. The only issue I had with the V6 GPU client was that I couldn't pause it. I could start and stop it, but pause was just ignored.

Right V6 never had a pause function but you could stop it, which is really the same thing. It will always resume from the last checkpoint. The only real change there have been some gradual improvements in the reliability of the checkpoints.
