Code: Select all

0x1002:0x6841:1:0:0:Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]:AMD Radeon HD 7500M/7600M Series
The device does not support OpenCL double-precision floating point arithmetic on driver version 15.100.1062.1004, according to both CLein 0.2 and FAHClient 7.6.9.

and the device had OpenCL support removed entirely by driver version 15.301.1901.0

All Thames GPUs are now in GPU species 4 (OpenCL support with no DP) instead of species 5 (OpenCL and DP support).

Does this mean that I'm in the clear to re-enable the GPU slot, and I'll get suited jobs?

if you have a GPU slot, it will lower your Points Per Day.
One CPU will be devoted to supporting the GPU, and since it is black listed, the GPU will never do any Work Units.

Ah, so, to be clear: these "GPU species 4" are blacklisted?

I started this thread because I was losing PPD by having the GPU enabled, but getting projects it didn't support.

I'm asking: now that it's classified as species 4, will it receive appropriate work? Or is it now prevented from getting work? (If the latter, it seems inappropriate that I am still able to enable the GPU slot... which is kind of why I'd started this thread, because that seems a bit wrong; I assumed putting it on the blacklist- if appropriate -would prevent accidents like this.)

We are in over my head, but this is what I think I understand.
Species 4 is not officially blacklisted as until recently some researchers were still doing projects using them. (The researchers stay with a given Core_xx throughout the life of a project)
At this point it appears all that work is done. However, a researcher could discover more work needed to finalize their project, so Species 4 is still supported. (Both Core_21 and Core_22 need newer GPUs)

Once everyone's paper has made it through peer review and is Published, F@H may officially blacklist Species 4. (It took years for Core_11 to finally be done, Core_15 had a long slow death as well)

If F@H jumped the gun, all the Species 4 Graphics cards may be pulled from PCs, and a researcher who needed just a little more work would not find GPUs which could do his/her work.

Current GPU projects use mixed precision (it means that most of the code use single precision but some part need double precision).

In AMD classification, species 4 means that the GPU supports the required OpenCL version, but not double precision. It means that you will no longer receive work instead of thrashing WUs.

You can remove the GPU slot, I'm pretty sure that we won't see compatible work in the future, but who knows ...

JimboPalmer is correct. Essentially, if a researcher starts their research on FahCore_X and has generated lots of data, they need to ensure that when they finish their research, they still use FahCore_X for scientific integrity. In some cases, if FahCore_Y has tremendous benefits over FahCore_X, then the researcher may make a call to move their project over but would have to verify that the results produced by FahCore_Y match what FahCore_X has generated to ensure scientific validity. Sometime, a new FahCore will see a massive spike in Projects since the researchers were waiting on it to start their research knowing that it was worth the wait.

If a GPU is blacklisted, this is what it would appear as:
0x1002:0x6841:::0
The missing values indicate that it is not supported for folding.
