For sure. My 2400G graphics are directly impacted by memory speeds, maybe even to a higher degree than the CPU side is. Anyone who doesn't look at memory on the higher side of what is supported is missing out. :!:

We need to change our semi-standard answer about overclocking. Normally we say the shader clock is important and the memory clock doesn't matter much.

That's reasonable for nVidia folks but the COVID surge has brought a lot more AMD GPUs into FAH and we should think about that more carefully. AMD made a big push sometime back about the advantages of using shared RAM.

For the AMD GPU's, that is solid thinking. Having played with mine some, I would say memory speed is just as important as shader clocks. When I built this system it was for my wife's work purposes, and we needed to get it up and running 100% stable quickly. Even though I got memory rated at 3200, I didn't have much time to do any benchmarks, stability testing, playing with the BIOS settings, etc. So when I got it up and running it defaulted to DDR4-2400, and I just let it ride since I knew she wouldn't notice and if anything it would make the system more stable. Over time as she needed it less, I upped the memory clocks to 2933, ran tests, etc, then clocked to 3200 and did the same. I would say PPD return scales almost directly with memory speed increases. And the same for the GPU shader clocks, though I haven't played with them much yet.

And I do think to some extent that shared RAM is helpful. On certain WU's with low GPU utilization on the bigger cards, this APU will just reduce memory use (size) and keep the GPU side up at higher utilization. On mid to larger atom count/complexity WU's usually GPU utilization will stay up at 95-100% and the memory use allocation grows.

And I'd assume the newer APU's are even more efficient in terms of power consumption, which is surprising even on my 2400G. When I do the quick math, it's about as power efficient when GPU folding as anything up to the 1650/1660 range in terms of PPD/watt. Of course both numbers are quite a bit lower, but the efficiency isn't bad at all. And I can GPU fold with the fans virtually silent if I want, with temps rarely getting above 50C.

The 4000 series is reported to be less affected by RAM speed, than the 3000 series, as the 3000 series runs the infinity fabric at half the rated speed of the DDR ram.
And most of the speed differences came from using lower RAM would slow down CPU die interconnects (due to slower infinity fabric).

The 4000 series should have a fixed infinity fabric. So CPU chiplets should communicate amongst one another at the fastest possible speed.
The RAM in the 4000 series is loose from the infinity fabric, but still makes a big difference.
Concerning RAM, most of the RAM used in Ryzen chips, is either running at their stock DDR4 setting of 2133Mhz, or via an XMP profile (manufacturer rated).
Due to the decrease in RAM size chiplets, they're more energy efficient, from the factory run at faster speeds already, and can be overclocked better.
but XMP is generally seen as overclocking, is actually not really.
It is, compared to the stock DDR4 specs (of 2133Mhz), but it is not compared to the manufacturer specs, where the modules are made to run at their rated (3200, 3600, 4000,....) Mhz.
Then you can overclock some of these modules even further, some going as far as 4400Mhz.
But that would be outside of XMP specs, which could result in overclocking errors, freezes and crashes.

I've read that most laptops with 4000 series CPU, come with a single DDR4LP memory module, and that they don't support dual channel mode.
Not sure if this is correct or not.
But that handicap makes it about 50% slower than their desktop processors, running at 50% higher TDP.
A 4800 running at it's stock '35W' (we all know 35 means probably 60W) is about 1/3rd the speed of a 3900x at it's rated '105W' (uses 3x more power).
So despite AMD's 'numbers', displaying a magical improvement in efficiency, they do seem to be just the same as their desktop counterparts, in terms of efficiency.

Also, Renoir (Ryzen 4000) laptops, are reported to run very, very hot!
It's not recommended to fold on them.
Especially not CPU + IGP if you have an 8c/16T version (or higher).

My Renoir iGPU on my 4900HS has yet to receive any work. Any ideas? What data would y'all need to see?

edit - The laptop is for sure dual channel although in their wisdom Asus soldered half of it to the motherboard so we can't get more than 3200MHz and usually will drop even lower unless you get a really good matching stick. Laptop is the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14. iGPU was about 4 times slower on boinc but was doing work, so I know it's capable of something and don't wanna waste it. I'd rather FAH than BOINC

We would need to know the Device ID for the iGPU on the 4900HS to verify if it is listed in GPUs.txt as supported and classified correctly. This topic - viewtopic.php?f=83&t=26208 - has some information and directions on how to find the Device ID if you need that.

Also post the first 100-200 lines of your log file to show how the client software sees your hardware and how the client is configured. If there are messages about requesting work for that iGPU, post a section that includes that.

We have the same sytem I'm guessing. Any way to force the client to hit the IP address you got work from?

sendentaryvince wrote:Looks like its running on GPU now. It's on a 0x22 core. I just manually uploaded the gpus.txt file from: and then restarted my client.

Thanks for your help!
