That has already happened before with GPU1.

I certainly hope not, at least for the "higher-end" older GPUs. There must be an enormous amount of GPU power that would be lost to the FAH project if that was true.

From the "Updates on GPU issues":
Updates on GPU issues
it sounds like they might be trying to get the 0x15 (or maybe some other new) core to work with older GPUs. I'm sure that many of our "older" GPUs (I have a GTX275 and a GTX285 folding 0x11 cores now) still have a lot to contribute, and I don't want to junk two perfectly good GPUs that cost me about $900 total when new. It seems to me to be extremely unlikely that so many GPUs which fold 0x11 cores OK would have a memory or some other fault which only shows up when folding 0x15 cores.

I myself have just started up a third system with dual GTX460s, to take advantage of the 0x15 core. My 3 systems are:
1) WinXP, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (2.2GHz), GTX275/896MB/0x11 core, gets about 8000ppd
2) Win7, AMD Phenom II X4 965 (3.4 GHz), GTX285/1024MB/0x11 core, gets about 12000ppd
3) Win7, AMD Phenom II X4 955 (3.2 GHz), dual GTX460/768MB/0x15 core, gets about 42000ppd

The #3 system has just started up, the 42000ppd is FAHControl's estimate for the CPU (smp:4) plus two GPUs.

There are a number of hardware platforms that used to fold but are no longer supported. First the ATI 1xxx series was no longer supported in favor of HD 2000+, Then ATI dropped support for everything that didn't support OpenCL which cut things off at HD5000+. Apple decided that the PowerPC platform needed to be replaced with Intel CPUs and FAH announced the deprecation of the PPC. (I'm sure there have been others.) In all the cases that I know about, the announcement preceded the demise of the platform by quite a while. The old WUs are generally allowed to run until there are no more.

Sure, I understand that old, slow, and outdated technologies eventually have to go away. I just don't think that this situation applies to the GTX275 and GTX285 at this time.

The MSI N285GTX SuperPipe OC (in my #2 system) was introduced in 2009 (I bought mine brand new specifically for Folding in 2010, for $500). Hardly an ancient GPU.

Also, my GTX275 successfully completed a core 0x15 WU as described here:
My GTX275 completed work successfully on this WU from the 171.64.65.105 Work Server:
PRCG 7624 (60, 0, 81); FahCore 0x15
Estimated value of this WU is 14093.00 points.

Both the GTX275 and the GTX285 are now getting FahCore 0x11 WUs from the 171.67.108.21 Work Server:
GTX275: PRCG 10504 (409, 0, 1113); FahCore 0x11; Estimated TPF 52.00 secs
GTX285: PRCG 10504 (0, 0, 1374); FahCore 0x11; Estimated TPF 56.00 secs

djay86 had success with a core 0x15 WU on a GTX285 here:
I'm currently folding on a GTX285 a 7624 WU and my AS is 171.64.65.105. I believe only the 7624 WUs works fine.

Also this from me:
The 2 GPUs that were failing are working OK now:
1) WinXP/GTX275: PRCG 8054 (0, 1179, 49); FahCore 0x15; Estimated TPF 4 mins 12 secs
2) Win7Pro/GTX285: PRCG 8054 (0, 2078, 40); FahCore 0x15; Estimated TPF 4 mins 30 secs

So, some core 0x15 WUs do work OK on the "older" GT200b GPUs.

My GTX285 successfully completed a core 0x15 WU as described here:
18:49:12:WU00:FS00:0x15:Project: 8054 (Run 0, Clone 2078, Gen 40)

The GTX285 successfully completed the 8054 (0, 2078, 40) WU, but started getting UNSTABLE_MACHINE errors on the 7626 (586, 1, 3) WU.

The exact same nVidia driver (currently 306.97) is used for the Win7/GTX285/GT200b and Win7/GTX460/Fermi systems, so it doesn't seem likely that the driver support for the GT200b GPUs is going away anytime soon.

As VijayPande said here:
Regarding the GPU_MEMTEST_ERROR, the old core was really lax about testing and let a lot of things go that it shouldn't. I'm open to the possibility that the new core is too strict, but we have done a lot of testing of this part. For now, we'll investigate what's up with the MEMTEST_ERROR issue, but this one won't be an easy fix (i.e. will take a new core, so it won't be ready this weekend).

From all of the above, it looks to me like some code tweaking could get the "older" GT200b GPUs to fold reliably with the 0x15 core. Or, that a "new" core for the GT200b GPUs could work for them the same way that the 0x15 core works for the Fermi GPUs.

Just my $0.02 worth.

If I remember correctly, the difference between 0x11 (GPU2) and 0x15 (GPU3) cores was the amount of CUDA support required from the video cards. Not all cards contained the HW necessary to support more advanced CUDA capabilities.

Even granting that this may be true, couldn't a "new" core be developed for the GT200b GPUs? After all, they (the GT200b GPUs) do work just fine on some of the WUs (7624 and 8054) for the 0x15 core as it exists right now. See what the differences are between these and the other core 0x15 Projects, to determine which new Projects will work OK with the capabilities of the GT200b GPUs.

Or, the AS software could be tweaked so that core 0x15 Projects that do work OK on the GT200b GPUs (for example, 7624 and 8054) will be assigned to those GPUs. That should be relatively quick and easy to do.

They (PG) can do anything they want. By far the easiest would be just to issue new GPU2 projects. It is just a question of allocating manpower. From PG's perspective all they need to know is if it is worth it.

Unfortunately, over time the old technology becomes less valuable as people buy into newer, more capable, video cards and slowly over time there are fewer of the older cards still being used. Looking back and supporting the old is nice to those with older technologies, but I suspect that PG is more into looking forward and seeing what those future possibilities may contain.

Sorry, but that explanation does not help those that do not wish to upgrade. I assure you, I was not happy either when GPU1 (ATI 1xxx series) was abandoned. I just moved on.

Yes, I'm sure that PG can easily find out how many "older" high-end GPUs are still folding, to see if it is worth it.

I think the issue is a bit more nuanced than just "want" or "don't want" to upgrade.

In my opinion, the collaboration between FAH and the folders is, and should continue to be, based on mutual respect and appreciation. We folders have a tremendous amount of respect and appreciation for all that PG has done, both for us and for the world as a whole. And in return, if a reasonable (not excessive) amount of effort on PG's part will allow us to continue to use our (in my case) 2-year-old expensive high-end GPUs, well that's just some tangible respect and appreciation coming back at us (again, in my opinion).

Respectfully,

In the olden days, some people were running pre-Fermi cards with client v6 -forcegpu Fermi flags in order to get more PPD. IIRC, that practice was frowned upon back then, the concern was that pre-Fermi cards might produce invalid results despite the apparent success. Has that changed? More specifically, is core_15 v2.25 supposed to add support for pre-Fermi cards as well, not just Kepler?

I am assuming it is, because I am currently folding a P7626 WU on a 9400 GT, WinXP 32bit setup with client v7.2.9. TPF is abysmal (about 2.5 hours) but it will be finished well before timeout (aka preferred deadline), and rebenched P7626 WU gets better PPD than core_11 work nevertheless. The question is, should I just dump this WU and go back to core_11 work - now that some is available once again?

I think that question needs to be asked of NVidia. The FahCore doesn't "support" particular generations of GPUs, the drivers and the CUDA code do. The science code makes certain calls to the CUDA code and it's responsible for turning that into instructions that can be run on a specific GPU or failing to do so. If NVidia specifies that certain hardware is not supported, then the assignment servers can be configured to prevent sending specific projects and specific FahCores to those types of GPUs.

I installed FAH as a service on top of the normal installation when I installed the new card. Running the installer again, for the normal client, seems to have made the FAH GPU work fine now.

I have included the before and after below. One thing I noticed, was the card came up as GK107, not GK104 as I would have guessed?

Additional info for when it was not working (service):

Re: GPU_MEMTEST_ERROR

Postby bollix47 » Sun Dec 16, 2012 10:46 am

Running GPU folding as a service is not supported:

Can I run the GPU client as a service?

The service installation is not currently supported. It may be possible to run the GPU console client as a service in Windows XP, but it may never be possible in Windows Vista/7, due to the different video driver architecture. Vista/7 does not present the driver interface to the service, so it would take a significant effort to make that work.

Got hit with the wrong core bug as mentioned on page3, stuck on update core for a month, kept restarting, deleting core exe's...nothing until
I deleted the work directory...BAM, it works.
5870Mobile in a G73 series lappy, chugs nicely @785Mhz from stock 700.

New machine has a GTX 660 OC and folds like a dream...should have done this a lot sooner, especially after the 4850 got canned
(anything < 5000 series). Bah.

I can understand not updating clients, but not serving up WU's was just rude. Yeah, the E8500 with the R4850 still works, but if
it is not being used to the full potential why fire it up at all? (ok, the whiny stock fan was most of the reason but still).

2 8cores and a quad core + 6870...I just hate giving up on hardware "because some think it's too old"...double bah.
