7.3.6 amd64 client questions

Postby HankB » Sat Mar 01, 2014 6:08 am

Just downloaded and installed this to a system running Debian Sid in an AMD 4 core CPU with a GTX 460 GPU. The default configuration set to use 'Full' resources maxed out the CPU but apparently did nothing with the GPU. I tried enabling the GPU by adding the following lines to /etc/fahclient/config.xml

Code: Select all
  <slot id='0' type='CPU'/>
  <slot id='1' type='GPU'/>

The status page at [deleted] showed only one slot which was a GPU slot. I commented out the second line and restarted FAHClient. The status page not shows one CPU slot (which is using all available CPU cycles.)

First question: Is there any hope of getting FAH to run on the GPU using NVIDIA 339.45 drivers? Is there any other NVIDIA S/W I need to install?

Second - FAHControl was not included in either .DEB I installed. They are:
Code: Select all
hbarta@olive:~/Downloads$ ls -l fah*deb
-rw-r--r-- 1 hbarta hbarta 4304048 Feb 28 22:24 fahclient_7.3.6_amd64.deb
-rw-r--r-- 1 hbarta hbarta 5364880 Feb 28 22:24 fahviewer_7.3.6_amd64.deb
hbarta@olive:~/Downloads$

Do I perform all control operations via the xml config file?

thanks,
hank

Welcome HankB,

For the "older" cards try older driver. 304/319 are working well. The newer driver you might get a lower folding performance; those driver work better for GK100 cards like 780 or Titan.

For the FAHcontrol there should be a separate .deb file fahcontrol<version>.

See here: http://folding.stanford.edu/home/guide/ ... all-guide/

Use the standard installer should make you a running config file. Make sure to share the log file with us in case of issues; easier to see.
Located in /var/lib/fahclient.

Almost everybody uses FAHControl to perform control functions. It's too easy to make a mistake editing config.xml by hand and some operations require a restart of the FahCore, which the combination of FAHControl/FAHClient takes care of. It's possible to perform control functions with command-line parameter strings but it's so much easier using the FAHControl GUI. For those who object to the overhead of a GUI control program, it can be shut down when you're not actually using it, which will be most of the time once you get everything going to your satisfaction.

Could you post the log, including the system and config portions? your problem with the GPU could just be that the power-level is at the default of medium so that the GPU slot only folds when the machine is idle.

Thanks for the helpful; replies.

The complete log of the unsuccessful attempt to use the GPU is shown below.

I went back to the download page and saw that FAHControl was there. I must have overlooked it the first time I looked. I much prefer something like that than manually editing XML.

Before I interrupt processing (and apparently lose progress on that work unit) I will wait for an evaluation regarding errors logged.

thanks,
hank

Edit: Since last night, I'm about 1/3 of the way processing an assignment (WU in BOINC terms.) It appeared that when I was getting this going, progress was lost on the present assignment when I modified the config file and restarted. Is there a way to modify the config w/out losing progress? Is there a way to tell the client to finish the current assignment and stop processing?
I've looked at the control program and did not find a way

What video driver are you using? You need the Nvidia proprietary. You can not use the open-source driver for its OpenCl support is not sufficient to fold with.

Same as P5-133XL I would hint on the driver. Try an older one; not the latest. 304.x or 319.x (I use that one for a 660TI) from NV site or xswat-ppa.
And I'm not sure if your current condition would impact the qualification if the passkey. Please try first without that special donor name and passkey in order to keep the required 80% success rate. Other please correct me if there is no risk.

I'd also recommend the V7.4.2 client.

You'll know the driver is fixed when the log gives a CUDA version instead of the current "not detected" message.

Thanks for the help.. I've switched to the 319 driver and the GPU appears to be working:

I'd also recommend the V7.4.2 client.

That's next. (And I hope I don't invoke the "if I fiddle with something long enough, I will break it.)

Re: 7.3.6 amd64 client questions

Glad it's folding.
As for 7.4.2: If it breaks you can easy downgrade the FAHclient back to 7.3.6. Did some times. Backup your config file before and after and try avoid while running a WU; it works but add some risks we might want to avoid. It goes go back to the latest checkpoint and you might loose the work done time after the last successful checkpoint and you stopped the client.
But 7.4.2 client normally works good; runs it since it became open beta under Linux.
