FahCore_a4 using 398% CPU. Won't uninstall

Postby tensider » Wed Jan 22, 2014 4:49 pm

I'm on a MacBook Pro. Yesterday my fan started running all of the time, which is unusual under most circumstances. When I checked Activity Monitor there were four FahCore_a4_exe processes that were taking all of the CPU (one per core?). They weren't decreasing their load when I started other apps. I went to the site and installed the 7.3.6 build.

This morning I found that now I had FIVE instances of FAH -- the original four plus FahCore_a4 that was using 398% of the CPU. All of the time.

I stopped FAH from the preference pane. The exe processes stopped but FahCore_a4 was still running, taking up 398%. I *removed* the preference pane and restarted. FahCore_a4 began after log in and – you guessed it – began taking up 398% of CPU. Force quitting stops everything for about 15 seconds, at which time FahCore_a4 starts back up.

Until this my FAH had never given me any issues. How can I make FahCore_a4 GO AWAY?!

Thank you,
Travis

Yea for some reason the 4 folding at home cores just keep coming alive. When the window for the program is up the slider is in the off position, or even when the program is quit or not running, the cores just come alive and keep processing something. I have forced quit the cores or the process in the activity monitor but they just keep popping back up. How can I fix this? The program is not listening to my commands.

I have the same issue, my cores come alive even when the program is quit and even after I force quit some of the cores, they just pop back up.

Could be a corrupt installation. Use the uninstaller found near the bottom of the page here. Then re-install, if you wish.

I have been running this version for months. So you are saying that some how the installation or the files became corrupt?

Sounds like you have more than one folding@home installation.
The preference pane is from version 6.

You shouldn't force quit folding processes in Activity Monitor, because they will be restarted, by design, by launchd.
You should especially never force quit the cores.

Run the uninstaller pointed to by Macaholic.

If you choose to re-install, make sure you only have one CPU slot.

Yes, everything really was running smoothly for months, and then all of a sudden went hyper. I had not upgraded before the original 4 core issue began. Upgrading only made the situation worse.

What I finally had to do was re-install 7.4, then use the included uninstaller for that version. That was the only thing that worked (including trying a removal program, AppZapper, on the 7.3.6 apps, which STILL did not take away the out-of-control process).

Thank you for the advice and links, everyone. I'll reinstall FAH in a future version.

I recommend against all so-called app uninstallers.
From what I've seen, they only really work for "simple" apps that don't need an uninstaller.
