Downgrading Nvidia Driver [Arch Linux]

Postby Kurtis200200 » Mon Feb 24, 2014 5:14 pm

Hey all,

Just set up an Arch Linux box with two GTX 660s, something something low ppd nvidia 331.xx

I'm looking to rollback 'nvidia' to 325 (via package 'downgrade') but I also need to rollback the kernel and 'nvidia-utils' and I'm worried about breaking something; should I just
$ downgrade nvidia nvidia-utils linux
and tell it to ignore the other packages, or should I uninstall nvidia and nvidia-utils, then rollback the linux kernel, then reinstall the 325-series nvidia and nvidia-utils?

I'm not that familiar with Arch, but it seems to me that the safer approach would be to uninstall Nvidia, switch to Nouveau, rollback the kernel, and the install the 325 series driver.

You mention switching to nouveau, I'm presuming, so that I can actually view my tty after this initial nvidia uninstall reboot?

The current procedure I'm looking to follow (on which I welcome comments from more experienced Arch Linux users) is as follows:

(1) sudo systemctl disable foldingathome.service && sudo systemctl stop foldingathome.service
(2) sudo pacman -Rdds nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-libgl
(3) (sudo pacman -S nouveau) && reboot
(4) downgrade linux (something less than .13) && reboot
(5) (sudo pacman -Rdds nouveau)
(6) downgrade nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-libgl (325) && reboot
(7) sudo systemctl start foldingathome.service (after which, check to see if coherent /opt/fah/log.txt output)
(8) (After 25 minutes, will want to check f@hweb or what have you for PPD estimate)
