Point adjustment for nacl projects?

Postby Dizzy » Fri Jan 25, 2019 11:28 am

I've noticed a change in point output while the wu output has remained about the same for projects 9020 & 9021. It used to be a nice even 125 point per wu. It seems like it's about 1/3 that now. Just curious...

According to the Project Summary the NACL work units are now worth 42 points.

This is kind of disappointing as I now have racked up 10 million points on an old laptop running Nacl. However this change does make sense as Nacl would give me a lot more points than running the desktop client. Time to finally switch over now, as I guess was the intention of this adjustment.

I've mentioned this before.
Got only 2k PPD out of my $250 netbook, but on NaCl I got 125points every 20-30 min. Big difference!

As a return favor, I guess, they seemed to have reduced the NaCl WU sizes as well.
Wus are now flying on my desktops (it used to do 0.1% per second, now it does closer to 0.15% per second).

I gave up on folding on NaCl, only on my work desktops.
At home I purchased a cheap $50 graphics card. This card folds so much faster than any CPU out there.
Then I bought a $100, and then a $200 one.
If you want PPD, nothing beats running the client on modern graphics cards!

Aye, in today's world nothing screams PPD like a GPU. I offer this insight:

In terms of power use, I had a Super Micro server folding with 4 Opteron 6182SE's. It did a respectable rate of ~300k PPD. Problem was it drew about 750 watts to do it.
Now I have a single GTX 970 that is doing about the dame PPD, but only using about 200 watts.

I also recently built a new folding rig. It draws just uder 700 watts, similar to my now retired Super Micro. However, this rig houses 3 2070's and is pushing out a lil over 3M PPD.

I realize not everybody has a big budget for these things, and that's where ProDigit's insight comes to play. For what he spent and considering the PPD he gets is the reason i retired all my CPU folding. I save my CPU's to feed the GPUs.
This way we can all maximize our folding on whatever budget we have :D

I'm currently running 3 graphics cards. My cap is 300W. I'm running at 0.5M PPD reliably. Sometimes 600+k PPD.
I had an RTX 2070, but my bios didn't support it. Pity, because that card does 1M PPD at only 200watt.
But for financial reasons, and the fact that most of my stuff is second hand, bought at less than 1/2 the new price. I did lose some money over I hardware, and projects that didn't work out.
But if you want RTX cards for folding, you're looking at $1k+ rigs, or 3x more than what I spent.
I will have spent the same amount on one RTX card, as I do on 3x second hand 1060s, and 18 months of folding on electricity.
Second hand RTX cards go for nearly new price.

Yes. I strongly recommend that you upgrade by installing FAHClient. Those assignments run longer per assignment and will earn more points by virtue of the Quick Return Bonus. The NaCl assignments were short and did not return a bonus. Moreover, you will have the opportunity to fold with GPUs (except on Mac OS-X). They are able to do a lot more science very quickly.

You have been receiving a lot more points that you should have been. Since the previous NaCl points were a result of FAH's benchmarking mistake, there's no plan to adjust them retroactively. Be thankful for both the points you earned rightfully and for the points you did not earn.
