OpenCL.dll error after Win 10 Creators Update

Postby TitanXp » Sat Apr 15, 2017 9:34 pm

After I completed the Update I opened F@H and got this error. I uninstalled/reinstalled and still get this error.

edit
I reinstalled the same latest drivers and that fixed it.

Did the update also update your video drivers with ones supplied by Microsoft? That probably removed the the OpenCL support which is needed by folding. You can probably fix this by downloading and installing video drivers from AMD or nVidia.

i wish tha Microsoft understood that if OpenCL (or CUDA) is installed on a sysem, they should not be allowed to uninstall them. It'll take some additional logic added to WindowsUpdate, but their present policy sucks.

That seems strange, that manually reinstalling the drivers would not rectify the problem. I don't doubt you; but it just seems strange.

Video drivers mean different things to different folks. Open source providers typically design drivers that support VIDEO (only). Apparently WindowsUpdate sees it the same way, assuming that the only reason you have a GPU is to display video on your screen.

The drivers supplied by the GPU manufacturers assume they need to include OpenCL (etc.) since you might want to do some calculations that are not handled by the "Math CoProcessor" in your CPU.

Is openCL support as simple as including the OpenCL.dll? If so, is there a case for the client / core to include the relevant nvidia / amd file?
At least that way, folding cores can ship with a known good and tested version and it could remove many of the problems where driver and windows updates break things.

OpenCL.dll is only the common interface, AMD and Nvidia drivers must also provide the runtime like nvopencl.dll or amdocl.dll which changes with each driver release.

AMD and NV do provide the updated version every time there's a new release of their basic drivers. When Microsoft installs the updated drivers, they give you a clean install without any optional features like OpenCL and CUDA. I guess that makes sense since Windows10 is designed for phones and tablets, and computers are treated as an afterthought.

I've got the same problem.
I'm running an old GTX560ti
How do I set the index to 1 ?
Which version of NVIDIA drivers do I install ?
Thanks
Note: the creators update runs fine on my other rig with AMD GPU.

After telling the NV website which hardware you need drivers for, it will suggest the latest released version. That will be >= the version installed by Microsoft (so maybe they won't screw you up again if they insist on the minimum version being the one you have.) I generally choose only the optional features I want, but there's nothing wrong with installing everything except it takes longer and uses more disk space.
