FAHClient stalled, FAHControl loses connection

Postby Sticky » Wed Aug 21, 2019 4:23 pm

Seems like the core is having a issue. No settings where changed prior to this issue. I've tried deleting the 'work' and 'core' folder for this WU multiple times, i'm reassigned the same WU each time. If I delete the 'work' folder contents, and I restart FAHClient, while FAHClient is trying to get a WU, FAHControl works fine, and I can open the FAHClient systray menu. Once FAHClient runs the FAHCore, FAHControl loses connection with FAHClient and the FAHClient systray menu no longer works, from this point on FAHClient is seemingly stalled(never recovers, 0% cpu usage, after many hours I have to 'kill task' it).

Any ideas?

Thanks

The line 15:16:06:FS00:Set client configured is an indication that you are not starting FAHClient correctly and when you restart, the files that FAHClient has written are no longer where it expects to find them. So is 5:16:05: CWD: C:/Documents and Settings/***/Application Data/FAHClientV7

By default, FAHClient will write it's files in %APPDATA%/fahclient and when it is restarted it will find the necessary files there. When you choose to put them elsewhere, I believe there are several settings that must be adjusted so that it works properly. (I cannot give you the necessary details as I've never done that myself and I don't remember seeing it documented anywhere.)

On an unrelated subject, I suspect that you will not be able to fold with your GTX 460 (and certainly not without OpenCL support). Assuming that is correct, you may wish to remove the GPU slot (using FAHControl) and adjust the number of CPUs to 4 rather than -1 or 3. Throughput should improve.

I've not changed any of the paths since many years ago. All the paths listed in the log are valid( asterisk are just for privacy). This has been a Windows Scheduled Task for all these years, and I haven't touched or even altered the task schedule. If you look at the log file below the 'System' section you will notice the contents of the config.xml file(which match up with the file in the %APPDATA%/FAHClientV7 dir, and if I change any of the settings either through FAHControl before it loses connection, or just editing the config file directly, the new settings show up in the log). The GPU is not listed as I had to remove it some time ago(at least a year or two I believe) as it stopped receiving WUs.

As stated in my OP, the FahCore_A7.exe(as seen in the log) starts, but just seems to sit idle not doing any work, and the FAHClient.exe seems to lock up at the same time. No other indication of an error is given.
Am I missing something?

Is virtualization turned on or off?

FAHCore_a7 is supposed to detect whether or not your CPU/OS support AVX, and depending on that result, either SSE2 or AVX will be used. I'm not sure how the code detects that feature. AVX is faster, of course, except if it isn't supported. SSE2 should always work.

"Set client configured" is a mystery to me. Generally that means that FAH didn't find config.xml in the directory it opened. Is it there before you start FAHClient?

Far as I can tell it's turned on, according to grc.com SecurAble

"Is the config.xml file present in the %ADDPDATA%/FAHClientV7" folder? Yes the file is present at all times, I don't have any weird config of network drive shares or anything of that sort.

I increased the verbosity to 5,The work server was empty since the early AM and just got a WU at 15:31 ET. I don't see anything of particular use in the log though, and it's stalled again exactly as before.

The log starts at 15:29 as thats when I shutdown the software and changed the log verbosity.

Re: FAHClient stalled, FAHControl loses connection

Log shows you are running XP Service Pack 3, the minimum requirement for use of AVX is Windows 7 SP 1. F@h should be assigning you the SSE2 version of the A7 core, but I forget how that shows up in the log for Windows. In addition there may be other dependencies to run the A7 core that Win XP does not meet, or needs an update to one of the libraries.

P.S. Please return the logging verbosity to its default of 3. Higher levels are not providing any useful information in situations like this, and actually impede troubleshooting.

Do we still have 32 bits cores available ?

Yes, sort of.

Each project specifies which core and which version to use. If all active projects happen to specify that they need a 64-bit FAHCore, you may be able to download the 32-bit FAHCore, but it won't be invoked. The scientist running that project makes the decision.

Projects started with the 32-bit core can continue to be processed with that FAHCore but I don't have any way to identify if there are any projects with this setup.
