Debian 10 Linux Server CLI how to set Password?

Postby sourceengineer_ » Mon Mar 23, 2020 5:12 pm

Yoyo, i have a Linux Debian 10 Server and installed the FAHClient on it etc and it works perfectly fine. But i wanna Monitor it from home so i want to connect to it. I already have open my Firewall and the port for it (Can connect VIA telnet) still its a bit weird to not have a password and i haven't been able to find any infos regarding setting a Password on the Linux Server.

Also i can't find a proper command for the Telnet cli

(Its an Terminal ONLY Server, so FAHViewer does not work)

Thanks in Advance!

I had to figure this out last night.

First generate a password, so you have something random and secure.

Now, as root, edit /etc/fahclient/config.xml to add:

Code: Select all
<allow v='<IP OF COMPUTER YOU WANT TO MONITOR FROM>' />
<password v='<PASSWORD>' />

Replace <IP OF COMPUTER YOU WANT TO MONITOR FROM> and <PASSWORD> (including removing the <> each time) with your specific IP and password.

Restart the fahclient service (systemctl restart FAHClient.service or equivalent) and you should be good to go. It's possible that with setting the password you don't need the IP <allow .../> stanza, but it's working for me with it, and I do like to lock such things down by IP as well.

Hope this helps.

We usually recommend using ssh or other secure client to connect to the remote machine if it is not on your LAN, and then telnet into FAHClient from there. Then it would be telnet 127.0.0.1 on port 36330.

Did you mean FAHControl instead of FAHViewer?
