HTTP_FORBIDDEN - 401 HTTP UNAUTHORIZED

Postby Jenkins13 » Tue Apr 21, 2015 9:12 pm

Hello,

This will be the third time I've tried to post this. I'm getting the above error @work. Please excuse my rush as I just lost all my previous text AND our System Admin is resigning on Thursday and I would like to get this resolved before then. I have seen this error in other forum areas, but not under or with V7.4.4

Again, my apologies for the briefness. I would really like to get Folding@Home (actually work) working.

Thank you in advance for your valuable time, help and consideration.

Respectfully,
Cliff

Re: HTTP_FORBIDDEN - 401 HTTP UNAUTHORIZED

Postby Joe_H » Tue Apr 21, 2015 10:37 pm

First, the error message when you connect to the IP address using a browser is normal - "http://171.67.108.59:8080 401 HTTP UNAUTHORIZED /". What response you will get depends on the server and which version of the assignment software it is running.

As for the rest, they point to communication to and from your folding client being blocked, whether that is from a firewall or being done by anti-malware software. Specifically, the FAHClient process needs to be allowed to establish network connections to send and receive data over http connections on ports 80, 8080 or both.

I would be most concerned about the messages:
Code: Select all
Connecting to assign-GPU.stanford.edu:80
WARNING:Attempting to update GPUs.txt from assign-GPU.stanford.edu:80: Received empty GPUs.txt

That's a pretty clear indication that your security software needs have an exception configured to allow FAHClient.exe to connect to the internet.

And standard disclaimer, the FAH software license states that you need permission of the owner of the computer to the FAH software, preferably in writing. Verbal arrangements have a habit of getting lost.

As of this morning. Our System Admin is able to run it no problem from his system using Chrome.
On my system, as of this morning, I had just the above lines in my log file.

SO, I've disabled my AV/Software and my VM connections so that ipconfig shows just my single connection.
Firewall and other security features both the Sys Admin and myself are on same policies, no restrictions.
Using Chrome.
I'm back to getting the HTTP_FORBIDDEN error along with the above error.
So it appears to be machine specific. :( Which is never fun to diagnose.
Any other suggestions?

This may be a dumb question, but your network wouldn't be using a proxy server would it? I just ask because I see that you have both ports 80 and 8080 listed in the log files. If so that is where I would start.

No on the proxy server. :( We are not using one.

You're talking about two different things. The FAH client that's designed to run in Chrome is decidedly different from the FAHClient that you've installed on your system. You can choose either on, of course. The Chrome client is simple and is limited to CPU processing only. The FAHClient you've installed is much more powerful (and, depending a lot on how deeply you choose to dig, is more complicated.)

Running anything in a browser will be able to connect to the internet because the browser is recognized by your security software and default permissions to open connections. Reasonable reliable security software will NOT give default permissions that allow FAHClient to connect to the internet. (All unknown processes are assumed to be spyware until you adjust their security permissions.) Fahclient.exe needs to be given browser-like permissions manually.

Thank you bruce. Yes, neither of us realized that there were two different versions. I, like our Sys Admin, launched the Chrome client and it works. I have the Sys Admin installing the FAHclient and we will T/S from there.

When you express, "depending a lot on how deeply you choose to dig, is more complicated." I am new and have not really altered or snooped around in the Config and preferences area. I did just change log verbosity to level 5.

That is one change we do not recommend. The extra logging is very rarely useful, and most of the time actually gets in the way of troubleshooting an issue. The default setting of 3 is recommended.

Changing to level 5 did not improve anything, still same info. Changing back to 3.

Yes, change it back.

As a general rule, no tinkering with settings is required. FAH does a commendable job of picking a respectable set of defaults for a wide variety of systems. If you don't know what something does -- or even if you think you want to change setting X -- my primary recommendation is don't change it. Come here to the support forum and discuss it. You may hear conflicting advice but at least it will be an open discussion by people who have a pretty good understanding of which settings do what.

Obviously that doesn't apply to Name/Team/Passkey which you absolutely SHOULD personalize.

Next is the setting for "client-type" which defaults to the safest setting of "normal." If you change it to "advanced" you'll be exposed to a wider selection of projects, some of which can carry increased risks of instability. As long as you can consistently get assigned new WUs, normal is a good setting. Unless the servers run low on projects for your system, the risks carried by advanced are unnecessary, even though they're pretty minimal.
