old GPUs not receiving work units

Postby nickjd » Wed Aug 12, 2015 10:30 am

Hello friends, I (temporarily) live in the north of Sweden where we need heating much of the year. I figure comparing kWh to kWh, I'd rather have them be doing something like FAH even if they are older inefficient computers. I've been running FAH for years now, since 2005. But where I live everyone heats with electricity (cheap hydroelectric sources). My house only has one heat pump and 60-75% is resistance heat.

My main desktop is an i7-4970k @ 4.7GHz and a 760GTX. That's working great. But I noticed that some old computers that I've accumulated haven't been receiving work units for the GPU and they have been running it for years previously. I had two old Quadro FX 570 cards, an 8800GTS and a Quadro FX 880m in my old thinkpad that no longer receive work units. And again, I don't care about efficiency lol. Heat is heat and I figure that a small donation to FAH is better than no donation with resistance heating. I figure they will add up to about 10-15k ppd.

All have the latest FAH install so I really don't know what the issue is. Are these just too slow? FAH tries to download work units but it is in a continuous cycle of timing out.

I tried searching around, but I didn't find anything definitive. I figured someone will know the answer to this and if there is a workaround or not.

Thanks!
Nick

Edit: I'm running all of these in windows 8.1 and windows 10.

The older projects that used Core_11 on the pre-Fermi nVidia GPU's you are mentioning ran out last year at this time. Some of these pre-Fermi cards can process WU's that use a slightly later GPU core - Core_15. This folding core is in end of life, but a handful of projects are still finishing up.

If you want to try and see if your GPU's can process Core_15 work, add two parameters to the GPU folding slot to indicate you want these Core_15 WU's. They are max-packet-size set to small and client-type set to beta. You will need to check to see if the processing is successful, most cards known to not work have been disabled, but depending on the maker some based on the same chipset from nVidia that work normally do fail.

Seems to work on the Quadro FX 570 cards. That means it will likely work on the other cards too since they are from the same generation. Thanks again!

Re: Help GPU folding not working?

Postby ApparentMan » Fri Aug 21, 2015 3:31 am

Not intending to steal/hijack this thread, but I have the same problem with my FAH software, it solely uses my CPU(s) for folding (Intel Core2Quad Q6600+), but the GPU folding never activates (I would prefer the GPU do all the folding if possible? Nvidia GeForce GTS250 1gig card).
Is there a way to always start FAH with GPU only? (since I only turn on FAH software when I am about to turn off the monitor and let the computer sit idle)...for example when I go to bed?)
Thank you for your time and Please forgive me if this counts as hijacking a thread.

@ApparentMan - moved your post to a topic related to your question

See my answer above for the details on folding with a pre-Fermi model of nVidia GPU.

You will have to determine which model of card you have as nVidia sold several as GTS 250's, and they all use different GPU chipsets. An older version is not compatible with Core_15 folding at all based on its entry in GPUs.txt, but the newer ones can possibly be used. If the GPU is identified in the client as unsupported, then you will not be able to use it at all.

If you upgrade your GPU to Fermi or better, then yes, you can fold with the GPU and not fold with the CPU. The GPU needs a certain amount of CPU processing but the heavy work being done by the CPU will decrease, reducing the heat generated/Watts used by the CPU but increasing the heat generated/Watts used by the GPU.

I recommend the best GPU you can afford to maximize throughput and newer ones generally produce more points per watt.

Re: old GPUs not receiving work units

Postby WardoftheWood » Mon Apr 20, 2020 6:40 pm

The struggle continues.
Core i5-6400, 4 core @ 2.7GHz
GeForce GTS 250 (on white list)
Win10
FAH 7.6.9
Processing ONLY on the 4 cores
Win10 see's GTS 250
FAH does not.

1.) How to tell if GPU will work - how do I find the "version" of the GPU? (I looked above but did not see that answer and online but know don't know the exact query to make the search with)
2.) Does the GPO have to have the monitor plugged in for FAH to work? (currently using HDMI on MB)
3.) Budget is limited so what GPU would you suggest if the GTS 250 is to old? (i'm not a PC gamer so buying a GPU is ONLY for FAH purpose so biggest bang for my money)

Thanks

Re: old GPUs not receiving work units -One Answer

Postby WardoftheWood » Mon Apr 20, 2020 8:42 pm

Ok, took me more time than necessary ....
The problem is resolved
When adding a slot under GPU set it to 1 not 0. by default it is -1. When I read this ...
"The first GPU in the system starts at 0" I took that to mean set the value to 0 not 1.
It needs to be 1 for it to use the GPU.
So new question, how can I make this card "cook with gas", I have a spare and want to push the one to the limit. Suggestions?

The GTS 250 is on the GPUs.txt list, but is blacklisted as too old and lacking OpenCL 1.2 and support for double precision calculations. GPUs.txt is more of a "greylist" as it lists both whitelisted and blacklisted cards.

Code: Select all
0x10de:0x0097:::G70 [GeForce GTS 250]

Basically any card that has the 3rd and 4th fields empty or zero is blacklisted.

There are several sites where you can look up cards and see what they support. techpowerup.com is one I have been using, I also check the Wikipedia pages https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_A ... sing_units & https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_N ... sing_units. You are looking for GPUs that support at least OpenCL 1.2 and have Double Precision (DP or FP64) support.

As for which card, that is going to depend on your $ budget and what power is available in your system to run a GPU card. If limited by power, in the nVidia line you would be looking for cards in the xx30 to xx50 range. Not as familiar with the AMD line on the lower power usage end of the scale. These can also be purchased for under $125 or so. If looking at older cards, nothing older than the GT700 series.

I am going to list some current cards that have odd form factor and power needs.

The fastest Nvidia GPU you do not need additional power plugs for is a GTX 1650.
The fastest Nvidia GPU that fits in a Dual Slot Low Profile case is also a GTX 1650
The fastest Nvidia GPU that fits in a Single Slot is a GTX 1070
The fastest Nvidia GPU that fits in a Single Slot Low Profile case is a GT 1030
The fastest Nvidia GPU that is fanless is a GTX 1650

The fastest AMD GPU you do not need additional power plugs for is a RX 560.
The fastest AMD GPU that fits in a Dual Slot Low Profile case is also a RX 560
