Great!
I suspect it read several changes on restart!

As a curiosity only, how many CPUs does Advanced Control show you using? How much CPU does Windows Task Manager show idle?

I was having failed on CPU slot 0, changed configuration to 16 threads usage, worked. Then created another 16 thread slot, again worked and gained fully loaded CPU, using v7.4.4. Link to screenshot, shows task manager, HWINFO monitoring and f@h advanced control.

Welcome to foldingforum, gupsterg.

Your screen-shot provides some useful information but we'd really like to see FAH's log. (See in my signature block below.)

With a CPU that can manage 16 threads, you really don't want two 16-thread slots plus one or more GPUs. It is possible to over-commit your CPUs, but (A) it's not recommended, and (B) it decreases the production of science rather than increasing that production and (C) that results in fewer points.

You should be good with a single 32-thread slot provided the machine is lightly used for tasks other than folding and your AMD GPU isn't sucking much CPU time.
As you found out, the default of 31 isn't go to work too well and it will be a bit of trial and error to find the next number down that works well.

I've just left a 1950x being stress tested in the office over the weekend and looks to be around 260k PPD with a single 32 thread slot. What does a pair of 16 bring in?

260k is good, i'm getting around that from 24c/48t of Ivy bridge xeon's at 2.4. I reckon a pair of 16 core eypcs would be around 500k

Cheers for the welcome :) , been doing f@h on/off since ~2007, EOC stats.

CPU is 32 thread, I will upload a log ASAP :) . As f@h had not ran on TR for me I just did 16 thread slot to see if it would work. As I didn't wish to lose the unit that was being worked and wanted to see if I could load up 32 threads I created another.

I will adjust to 32 or less thread single slot :) . My default for slot 0 was -1 IIRC. I have never needed to change default on Ryzen 7 but seems to be an issue with TR.

Cheers will try 32, nice PPD :) , why I used 2 slots is explained above.

Use 30 rather than 32, so you have headroom for the GPU slot. Upgrade to the 7.4.16 beta release, because it will automatically search for the best available WU to use max threads.

What is the max temp for Threadripper? Those 90-96C temps are a bit high in my mind...

Will try that :) .

AMD Ryzen/ThreadRipper for tCTL has offset on X edition CPU, tDIE temp is without offset, so ref that in my HWINFO screenie. Ryzen X editions have +20°C offset and ThreadRipper +27°C.

tCTL/tDIE is like Intel Package Temp. A Ryzen 8C/16T CPU has 20 temps sensors on die. ThreadRipper 16C/32T has 40. There is some rotating/highest value shown at an instance for tCTL.

tDIE of 68°C/tCTL of 95°C is where ThreadRipper will throttle.

The discussion of OMP_NUM_THREADS on the previous page apparently has been fixed by an update of FAHCore_a7 to Version: 0.0.14.

You are still running the original version of the A7 folding core, the updated version is still in beta test. Not sure when it will go to general release.

Do you have a log showing the run using the Beta version of the core and failing? The one you posted shows a run using the same v0.11 folding core. The developer has also posted looking for persons to test his fix for running the A7 core in a VM, that is here - viewtopic.php?f=89&t=30053&p=298344#p298344. Currently the beta core is up to v0.16.

There may be a workaround for your situation where you need to have OMP_NUM_THREADS set for your compilers and concurrently it needs to be unset for FAH. (Did not try this myself)
1) Create a batch file "fah.bat" in "C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient"
2) Edit the file with this content
Code: Select all
set OMP_NUM_THREADS=
cd C:\ProgramData\FAHClient
C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient\FAHClient.exe

3) Start the fah.bat

This way FAH should see no OMP_NUM_THREADS while your compilers still see the default OMP_NUM_THREADS value.
