preferred nVidia drivers ?

Postby sean_oz » Wed Feb 21, 2018 10:25 am

Any suggestions on preferred drivers for nVidia.
I am folding two of my dad's old boxes, with a pair of 560Tis and a 760Ti.
Random crashes, some screen flickering and the WU crashes, 'bad WU'on log and an occasional message about drivers not working on the 560Tis.
Temps OK less than 70*C, usually high 50s-low 60s. No over clocks, folding locally
Currently running the most current version on 560Tis - 390.77 ( 23.21.13.9077/win64)
Much less trouble trouble on 760Ti on 390.65 (23.21.13.9065/win64) drivers.

I am happy with 390.77 on a GTX 1050ti.

his WU just crashed while checking stats, may have something to do with using PC?

Error window came up showing drivers unresponsive or similar, i was to slow to read it properly, i think it was generated by NVIDIAs taskbar console?

Is the PC in use while folding? Games or video can get in conflict with folding.

I mostly fold on that PC, so I did a clean install of the driver only, not all the other programs. (geforce experience, 3d drivers, etc)

You sound as if your issue is not actually the driver but some 'wonderful' add on in the same package.

-5 is the code for CL_OUT_OF_RESOURCES error. It can happen for several reasons, but most frequently on overclocked GPUs because the driver detects a GPU fault of some kind and resets the GPU. (When it's being reset, there no resources available.)

Foldy offered an alternate explanation for it being out of resources.

The WU project:11432 run:0 clone:173 gen:76 is not FAULTY. After your client reported the error, it was reassigned and successfully completed by another Donor.

Thanks all, much appreciated.
Sam my, 14YO is keen, but may have been surfing the web with too many pages open at most.
No OC on the graphics cards, except for factory.
The most problem is coming from a PCIe Slot that is PCI 16-2.0x1.
I am leaning towards equipment/operator first, not blaming the projects. just reaching out to those wiser and more experienced than ourselves.

I have a great dislike of an incomplete o r 'Bad' WUs., just trying to get the bugs out.

We appreiate any and all advise.

Your original question was about drivers. I don't know what your OS is so can't advise other than to go to this site and search. https://www.geforce.com/drivers You said old boxes, so if you are on Windows XP it suggests 368.81

True,
Windows 7-64 pro, i7-2600k, 1GB RAM, 16x Gigabyte 560Ti 2OC, & 1x Gigabyte 560Ti

Just exploring all avenues to optimize a folding box, Sam (14yo) is learning a bunch from this, built his first two PCs one to fold and one to game.

As you have 2 GPUs you can try to only fold on the first one or the second one to see which GPU makes the problem or if it is independent of the GPU.

What power supply do you have? 2x gtx 560ti = 2x170watts = 340watts + PC 100 watts = 440 watts total power.

1GB RAM + windows + 2*GPU slots might be tight. When core21 came out I remember some suggestions of 4GB ram per slot to be safe.

I did notice the mistype, it's actually 16GB RAM, first edit must not have had my mouth right.

PSU 620W, I am actually measuring the AC load, is a touch under 350w now, i7-2600K 98%, 4.04Ghz, 55*C (Antec Kuhler 620, 2x fans), + 1x 760 at 98%, 62.*C.

We've taken the PCs offline today, swapped parts around, the 2x 560Ti's aree off-line, probably go back to single GPU folding shortly on both f-boxes with 1x 760 each.

@rw202 4GB RAM per slot is too much. It uses maybe 1GB and can only spikes up during initialization. I would say 4 GB is enough for 4 GPUs.
