Help w/Vista plz!

Post by 4ndr3w »

Lately my vista (32bit SP2) computer has been booting slowly. Under System properties -> performance -> advanced tools, it tells me a program is causing the computer to boot slowly. it tells me that program is cleanmgr.exe which i know is the disk cleaner program. I can't find any evidence in msconfig or the startup folder or windows defender that shows that it is supposed to run. What is going on?

Furthermore, my asus p5q-e has two sata setting ahci and "enhanced IDE". which is faster (or overall better)?

I cannot answer the first one, but for the second one AHCI is better. However AHCI usually needs additional drivers installed to work and afaik those drivers can only be installed when installing Windows itself. Enhanced IDE is probably a legacy mode with a few extra features normally included in AHCI.

Are you able to run Disk Cleaner from the Start Menu? If you can run it, does it show any odd behavior?

Thanks John, that's what i had it set to, just wanted to make sure.

I am able to run disk cleaner. it worked fine.
New development though. I contacted microsoft support and they told me to re-enable all services that i had manually disabled (how did they know i had done that? i only disable network services since i don't use the internet on that computer...)

Well, that worked. but I want to know WHY now. Which service, when disabled, causes it to boot slowly? i could give a list of diasbled services if you'd like, but it's kinda long.
