10x bonus factor limit

The current record for processing a 268x WU is 16 hours -- running on a 48 core AMD system. The second fastest time is 20 hours, a quad X7560 XEON (with 32 cores/64 threads).

Given these timings, it will be several years before a sub-3 hour completion will be possible.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't know that record and that getting k>10 is not feasible currently. I want to know how I should consider the bonus multiplier limiting only for the sake of completeness of my spreadsheet.

For example, the bigadv calculator (take a look at the source of http://www.linuxforge.net/bonuscalc.php) limits k to 10. I'd like to know if it's correct and if the same should be considered for (all?) Core A3 work units.

If you look down the right hand column of the Project Summary (link at the top of this page) you can see all the k factors. A quick glance shows P2684 the highest at 26.4.

That wasn't my question. I want to know for what work units the kfactor should not exceed 10 when calculating points.

For example, if I complete a 2684 work unit (8,955 points and kfactor = 26.4 as you pointed out) in 6 hours, k factor is 25.17 and I'd earn 225,410 points. If kfactor is limited to 10, I'd get 89,550 points.

Correct. BTW we've mentioned elsewhere but should probably re-emphasize: make sure you provide a passkey on assign. The assign passkey overrides the accept passkey, so if you request a work unit without a passkey and return it with a passkey, you won't get a bonus.

However, there are other bonus-eligible projects where it IS currently possible to exceed 10x. The 601x series have preferred times of 3 days rather than 4, but are MUCH faster to complete. My dual X5670 system does them in 1m20s per frame, finishing in under 2.5 hours.

Previously the system awarded no bonus when you exceeded 10x (rather than limiting it to 10x), but it appears now that it is providing a bonus. The 6012 I completed yesterday received 5149 points on a 470-point base.

how do you assign a passkey in SMP v 6.3...
coz i didnt understand what "assign passkey overrides the accept passkey" means.

You enter the passkey when the Client asks you:

Passkey []?

Enter your passkey, or press enter to leave it blank and go to the next option. Use of a passkey is optional. However, a passkey is required to be eligible for the quick return bonus on SMP2 work units.

My understanding of "assign passkey overrides the accept passkey" is this:
WU assigned: Username A + Passkey X
WU result: Username A + Passkey Y
If there is any change in either A or X, then you will not be assigned the bonus points. In the above case, the WU was downloaded with Passkey X but its result was uploaded with Passkey Y hence you won't get the bonus points.

WU assigned means when the WU is downloaded from the Assignment server.
WU accepted means when the WU is accepted back at Stanford.

Each will track what passkey was used for that process. If the passkeys are different, you may not receive bonus points.
