Over a day and 0.00% progress on both GPUs?

Post by Rasmon »

Hi,

Not sure this is the right forum, but since I am new and not sure where to start fixing this, I figured this is as good a place as any. I installed The latest FAHControl (v 7.1.52) downloaded yesterday and set it up to use GPUs only. I have a Nvidia GTX 580 and 8800 in this system. Both show a status of running with 0.00% progress and an ETA of unknown after about a full day of run time... I also installed the latest Nvidia drives as of yesterday. Below is the log.

Any ideas on what I should do to fix this?

Code: Select all

Hello Rasmon, welcome to the forum.

Do you have more of the log file. The above example only shows about 18 seconds of folding. Not enough time to see if anything went wrong...

Hi 7im. Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, that's the entire log! :(

I just hit pause and then waited a bit and hit fold, but now it seems to be stuck at "Starting GUI Server". Below are the additions to the log:

I was thinking that CUDA: 2.0 should be 3.0. Would you be up for removing the 8800, and trying on just the 560?

It appears that worked. The 580 is processing successfully now. Odd that the 8800 won't work though... Thanks for the help, 7im!

Hi Jim,

Well, that is even more bad news. I was thinking of buying a 680 (or 670) and using the slower for my 2nd monitor, so I could have both folding... Do you, or does anyone, know if a 580 will work in tandem with the 680 (or 670) on the same system and fold? I am using Windows 7 (64-bit), if that makes a difference.

Note: Still sucks I can't fold with the 8800 on the same system as my 580. If anyone knows how to fix that, I am all ears. ;)

Thanks!

It's my understanding that V7 is expected to fold with all combinations of GPUs provided they're supported. According to the history of the tickets, there have been several issues reported, some of which have been resolved and some of which have not been.

First, the issue of "supported":
ATI GPUs older than the HD 5000 are being deprecated, so don't plan on using them. The Nvidia 600 series isn't fully supported yet but there's certainly no reason to expect that it won't be in the near future but I wouldn't buy one yet.

Second, the issue of whitelisting:
The device codes for every supported WU must be uniquely listed by Stanford. There's a whole forum devoted to that issue. Once a GPU is whitelisted, it still make take some time before there's a core or work available for it. I think that the 680 is in that mode.

Third, there's an issue of drivers:
New GPUs often need a number of changes to the drivers before you find a version that works well. Drivers that work with Windows XP or with Vista-32 or with Vista-64 or Seven-32 or with Seven-64 often have uinique problems.

Fourth, the issue of configuration:
If each of your GPUs will fold when installed correctly by it self the FAH Client sometimes gets cofused and interchanges the configurations of one GPU for another when you install more than one. This has been on the list of unresolved V7 tickets more than once and isn't fully resolved, but with some manual reconfiguration, I believe any combination can presently be made to work with Windows7 and client V7. including your 8800 and your 580.

There is a post somewhere on the forum with details of how to configure your GPUs. Since they're different generations of GPUs, the client may interchange their cofigurations with no obvious indication except that it doesn't work. I think if you interchange the values of GPU_INDEX it might fix your problem.

Taking the 8800 out was not intended as a solution, only as a diagnostic test. I wanted to get at least one GPU folding, then add the 8800 back in, and see what happens. You could try that now... ;)
