I fired up my dedicated Ubuntu 13.04 64 bit Dell Latitude D430 and entered the same commands...

Same result.

It did have the 'auto start' box checked on initial install.

I remember because mint 15 did not work for me, so I went to a second choice distro, and made sure the box was checked during install.

I have mine set to pause on start and is why it doesn't start folding as soon as the command is excuted in terminal,
There for I have to right click in the control software then tell it to fold before it starts.

Just goes to show you not even the people that supposely run FAH know enough about there own software. lol

the passkey is more for stanford's security. it makes sure your units don't get credited to other user names.

I still want to figure out why the service isn't working. I think that's the more important issue, since it's how F@h is supposed to work by default. Spawning FAHClient isn't that great of a workaround for the general population.

In the old version of V7 7.2.9 under preference it had a way to do this by placing a check under
Local Client
AutoStart
Command: FAHClient

Well they remove this in the later version and isn't a help by doing so.
If the check is removed on install to auto start as a service, this is the only work around I have found to fix the problem.
I guess you could add a string or batch file to start up somewhere that would also do this.
I looked at all the extra commands at the FAH V7 info page but found nothing on how to get a auto start thew a command line
that would add this to say the config file so it would auto start when the FAHControl software was opened.
I'm sure there has to be a command or flag it issues from the config that tells it to start FAHClient as it did work at one point.

2 more questions.

I now have generated a passkey, and entered it into FAHControl.
I shut everything down, and rebooted.
Work unit did pick up successfully when I restarted all 3 again, but in the terminal log I still have a blank there for passkey.

When I load the next work unit, will the terminal then read my passkey from FAHControl?

Second, is there a best way to end the terminal, or just close away when done folding?

Well this is odd...
I had another laptop with a stock Mint 15 64bit cinnamon (Same OS as above), all updates made, plus 1 extra...
I updated the kernel from stock 3.8.0-19-generic, to 3.8.0-23-generic,

and the terminal was NOT required....

I just installed all 3 apps fresh on that laptop, and only fired the viewer, and FAHControl up, and she was folding...
I did however enter a valid passkey this install. Not sure if it could be related, just saying...
Wild!

** Update **
Rats, trying to close the loop and prove it was the kernel, I shut down the terminal on my Mint 15 desktop, to see FAHControl stop it's folding. (as expected)
I updatedthe kernel from stock 3.8.0-19-generic, to 3.8.0-23-generic, then rebooted.
Fired FAHControl back up, and it did not start folding.
It still required the Terminal, and FAHClient to be entered.

Not sure what to think now...

I decided to give the default install process a try.

Since the install process uses gdebi and my ubuntu 13.04 did not have that package installed I added it to my system using Synaptic Package Manager but it could also be added using a terminal and typing:

I then opened my Home directory, double clicked on Downloads, did a right click on fahclient_7.3.6_amd64.deb and selected Open With > GDebi Package Installer.

During that process I entered my username, team # and passkey. I left the setting at Medium but probably would have changed that to Full if I wasn't just testing the defaults. I made sure the box next to Automatically Start had a check mark in it.

The following showed up in the installer's terminal window:

When I looked at System Monitor I saw no entry for FAHClient but I heard my cpu fan rev up. The reason it did not show up is because, by default, System Monitor only shows your user processes and, when installed as a service, folding runs under a user called fahclient. To get System Monitor to show all processes click on View and select All Processes.(you could also open a terminal and use top or htop if it's installed)

At this point I did reboot my system and FAHClient did start it's service automatically.

I tested the following two commands and they both worked as expected:

sudo /etc/init.d/FAHClient start

I then installed fahcontrol_7.3.6-1_all.deb using right-click and selecting Open With > GDebi Package Installer. The installer added FAHControl to my system along with some needed dependencies.

I opened FAHControl from the menu and it connected to the client immediately.

When the current work unit finishes (right click on the slot in FAHControl and select Finish) I will purge FAHClient and attempt the install process again to see if something doesn't get purged properly. (this will be some time tomorrow as I got a P7611 and they take a while since it's only using 3 cores ... medium setting on a 4 core setup)

It's still not 100% clear to me why you're having a problem but the instructions worked for me.

I don't understand my issue either now....

On other laptops, I have installed mint 15 numerous times, then started folding without issue, exactly as your guide is written.

It must have been related to the button on initial install.
I know after we purged my app, and then re-installed it on my desktop, the button was in the correct default position during the re-install.
That still made no difference, and has not fixed that PC. It still required the terminal to fold. (I don't mind that for now, now that I understand what it needs)

My thinking is now that when you install the app for the first time, with the button off thinking you will just manually start it later when you want to fold... it is the kiss of death!
Even after the purge app command, then reinstalling, and having the button in the correct position on the second install might not fix your issue.
You might be playing for keeps without wiping your entire OS.

My desktop, with app purged, and correctly re-installed with button in the correct default position, did not fix that PC. It requires the terminal to fold.
I am thinking I will have to reinstall Mint from scratch to fix this.

People can say what they want, but a third icon, for the third process/app we are asked to install would be WAY better IMO!
I want the control to start and stop it, and visually verify that it's running. It's simply more natural, and better for the user, not the folding@home gang. The user should win.
We could then also change/update our entered data without trying out the purge command.

Not sure these PC's are going to help much.

Will these make the deadline, or abort?
For what it is worth, I think my folding is faster on Mint 15 than Ubuntu 13.04.

More trivia, one laptop I just set up for dedicated folding is a dual core 32 bit processor.
I installed Mint 15 32 bit. When I went to the home page to get my folding apps,
it offered me linux 64 bit versions.
I had to select other and go down to find the 32 bit versions.

It would be nice if it knew my mint 15 32 bit required the 32 bit engine, and offer me that.

It would seem that the WUs would be completed before the Timeout Deadline (AKA Preferred Deadline). I did the calculation by using the Project number, TPF and the Bonus Calculator (http://www.linuxforge.net/bonuscalc2.php).

However, a much quicker method for you is to start Advanced Control (AKA FAHControl) and under the Work Unit Panel on the right side, make sure that the ETA is always less than the Timeout Deadline. This ensures that you finish the WU with the QRB (Bonus points) if and when you become eligible. Moreover, every bit helps as long as the WU is returned before the Timeout Deadline
