Low PPD on GTX 770?

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Low PPD on GTX 770?

Post by Kranchan »

Hi,

I have recently started folding on my machine and it seems like my PPD is very low compared to others with similar hardware. I'm running a GTX 770 with the latest drivers and an i5 2500 but I'm only getting ~9,500 PPD on the video card. It's currently folding on a core 0x17 for project 8900. What am I doing wrong?

1) Does it fold 24/7? - Core 17 rewards quick returns so if you don't fold 24/7, you will be losing a lot of potential points.
2) Do you use the computer heavily for other things? - Same as above answer, if you do, it can hugely affect the points awarded due to the delay in completing the units.
3) Are you monitoring the card for heat and performance? - Use AfterBurner or similar to see what the card is doing. Sometimes the card can downclock due to heat.
4) How are you measuring ppd? - FAHControl can be very inaccurate. Use HFM.net.

No I'm not folding 24/7. Is 25 hours normal for a work unit on a 770? I haven't been using the computer for anything other than playing music all night and this work unit is only 7% done. Heat is not the issue at all. it's only at 55C and GPU Shark is reporting that it's being ~99% utilized. I'm just using F@H for the PPD info. How do I use HFM.NET? I can't find any instructions.

A P8900 will usually take a few hours on GTX 770 assuming that it is folding continuously with at least stock clocks. Are the frequencies of the GPU 3D or 2D? Are you using the latest Nvidia WHQL Drivers? Also, please post the initial section of the log as bollix47 has requested so that we can get a better understanding of how your FAHClient is setup.

Regarding HFM.NET, once you install it, you configure it so that you can monitor your V7 installation. You can get additional details here (viewtopic.php?f=14&t=9903).

The issue is that the Folding Slider is in Off position:
12:32:25: <power v='off'/>

If you want to fold on the system whenever it is turned on, please move the slider to Full. Please note that you may experience screen lag. In that case, you may want to move the Slider from Full to Medium which will ensure that the GPU will fold only when the system is idle (certain conditions should be met for this http://folding.stanford.edu/home/faq/fa ... ion/#ntoc3).

Ok HFM finally gave me TPF and it's only estimating 37k PPD for the 770. Is this normal for that card?

Part of the 'problem' is that the CPU is being oversubscribed. The client is set to use all 4 cores for the CPU slot but the GPU slot requires 1 core too when running core_17. So the client is attempting to do 5 cores worth of work on a 4 core system. The 'solution' is to change the CPU slot to use 3 cores. Using FAHControl highlight the client and click on Configure>Slots and double click on the CPU slot. Change the setting for CPUs from -1 to 3. Click on Ok and Save.

Don't worry about HFM initially. FAHControl becomes more accurate after folding a few frames.

Also change the CPU usage back to 100%. But also reduce the CPU count as noted above. It will perform better and still have the same affect.

Also consider changing the next unit percentage setting from the default of 98 to 100. No need to download the next WU sooner than needed on a fast connection.

There have been reports that the latest drivers do cause a significant loss of PPD on GK104 cards. If you don't need the latest drivers for a specific reason you may want to give the 327.23 drivers a try. Even 314.07 may be worth trying if can find them and if they support the 770.

Agree to bollix47 suggestions; the latest NV driver are good for 780 and Titan; one generation earlier cards are hit with respect to performance. Downgrade the driver will help to improve the folding performance.
