BAD_WORK_UNIT 7520 (110, 1, 293) [Not Bad WU]

Post by BlackSun59 »

No credit given for partial WU.
Athlon II X4 640, 4GB RAM, Win 7 Pro 32-bit OS, F@H client v7.4.4, no overclocking, no overheating (CPU@50°). Usually 75xx series run just fine over 18 hours or so.
Any ideas?

Someone else successfully completed the WU, so it is not a bad WU. The problem is likely at your end. I have no idea what the problem is though.

Well, okay, I have no clue as to what the problem could be, either.
But I'm not seeing the upload of the 80% completed work, nor do I see partial credit for 80% of the WU being done.

Does this mean I wasted 14 hours folding?

Your system did not upload anything to be given credit for. The error was the following:
09:39:08:WU00:FS00:0xa4:- Could not write compressed data to results file.
09:39:10:WU00:FS00:0xa4:
09:39:10:WU00:FS00:0xa4:Folding@home Core Shutdown: EARLY_UNIT_END
09:39:10:WARNING:WU00:FS00:FahCore returned: BAD_WORK_UNIT (114 = 0x72)

09:39:10:WARNING:WU00:FS00:Missing original Unit data, cannot send dump report
As I recall, the error code "114 = 0x72" is passed through from Windows. It would have to be looked up to see what caused that error, my suspicion would be that it was related to the filesystem.

As for partial credit, not all projects give that for incomplete WU's. I don't recall any of the Core A3 or A4 projects giving partial credit in the past few years. Partial credit is more common with newer cores and/or projects that do not have a track record of being completely stable.

Okay, then, I guess I did waste 18 hours worth of folding.
Googling the "114=0x72" error comes up with
ERROR_INVALID_TARGET_HANDLE
114 (0x72)
The target internal file identifier is incorrect.
and that the causes could be malware, adware, spyware, viruses, a corrupt application, a new application having been installed without removing the old one completely, registry corruption, or file system errors.
Great. In other words, it could be anything short of sunspots.

If I'm using the F@H client to fold with my CPU, how do I get newer cores or projects?

There is also the Chrome NaCl/pNaCl client for the CPU only. It's WU's are all brand new since the client is brand new. It's WU's are designed for low-performance CPU's or part-time folders that have difficulty finishing WU's with the v7 client. The WU's for the NaCl client give base points only with no QRB bonus points.

You can join the Beta Team. They tend to have access to the newest cores and projects. However, they also tend to fail the most for they are the least vetted so do not expect an increase in PPD.

You can also join the freenode #FAH IRC channel where the developer is currently doing alpha testing of ocores which is a brand new core that is currently just running from the command-line with no PPD at all.

If you read the error messages, you'll notice that the error was associated with your filesystem, not with the computations done by FAH. Your system was unable to return the WU. When nothing is returned, it's impossible to give either full or partial credit. Maybe your filesystem got full or you had a permissions problem or maybe it was something else associated with your OS, but it had nothing to do with whether the WU was old or new.

Ah. I see now. The work vanished, so there was nothing to upload.
I'll have to take a look at my system logs to see just WTH was happening with my system at the time the WU work vanished.
Thanks, all.

Another possibility: Your AntiVirus program could have discarded some unknown files based on a theory that if it's not something it recognizes, it might be a virus. Reconfigure your AV program NOT to scan FAH's work files.
