No Video card that old is still supported for folding.
(Some Nvidia cards almost that old can just barely fold Core 15 projects, but Core 15 is on it's last legs)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon#Technology_Overview
The oldest ATI/AMD card to still be able to fold would be based on Evergreen.

Hello EPski, welcome to the Folding Support Forum.

For reference, the minimum specs are listed in the Requirements section of the FAH Install Guide for each operating system type, in this instance the Windows Requirements. Both CPUs and GPUs are detailed.

Thank you for the information, I thought that R600 was white-list, but blacklist[ it was listed!]{and 35USD}. I am planning on buying a Radeon r7 260x, if I do not find out if a Firepro w4100 would be supported.

The GPUs.txt file is both a white-list and a blacklist. So the entry for the 7600,
0x1002:0x940f:::R600 [FireGL V7600]
shows three colons in a row and that indicates it is blacklisted. If the entry has integers between the colons, then the card is white-listed.

The R600 does not support OpenCL, which is essential for FAH.

I won,t really notice a difference between a Firepro and a Radeon GPU. I cannot find anything about this for folding at all on the web. The only thing I can think of is the data may or may not have less errors or more significant precisions/accuracy.
should I spend the extra 46dollars?
both the Cape Verde/Bonaire GPU,s appear to be supported.

Here is more specific information on the GPUs.txt greylist.

It also shows hardware family specifics for ATI/AMD and NVidia (supported, unsupported).

The Firepro W4100 is based on the Cape Verde chip and is supported by FAH. However the card has not been whitelisted yet. Even finding the Device ID took some effort, but it is whitelisted now.

The software determines whether single precision or double precision floating point will be used and you have no control over the accuracy expected. FAH uses single precision which is supported on both. Firepro is generally more optimized for Double Precision than the Radeon GPU, but since that's not used by FAH, no, I wouldn't spend the extra $46.

Not completely true :

- Radeon cards are main stream, optimized for gaming in mind. They support single precision at full speed, but are usually heavily limited in double precision calculations. nVidia equivalent family is GeForce.
- Firepro cards are usually exactly the same as Radeaon equivalent model, but Firepro drivers are optimized for professional application (like Photoshop, CAD, After Effects, ...) and might feature some specific video outputs for professional use. nVidia equivalent family is Quadro.
- Firestream cards are designed for computing. They usually don't have outputs to connect a monitor, they use ECC memory and higher amounts of memory, and they can compute both single and double pecision computations at full speed. nVidia equivalent family is Tesla.

To fold, the main stream family of cards is usually way enough. The extra costs of the professionnal families have no benefits.

Thank you , I am currently going to get a Radeon, hopefully better than the two I have now. I do not plan on using the programs the Firepro is designed to interface with, and I think the Bonaire gpu will interact with the client like a Bonnaire pro! as far as errors from my computer are concerned, with or without double precision, the F@H server will see no significant difference in usability of my WU, wherever they may fit in.
All I could find about F@H prefernces was GFLOPS, rather, TFLOPS. so it is Youtubing with Radeon...

You will want to add a passkey so the client is eligible for bonus points.

That is one of the things I have been avoiding, I did not know the client was going without bonus points. I do not really understand how the word client is used by F@H sometimes. Software yes, but is there like a "sponsor, boss, contractor..." or something ? --personal points for rotating anonymous administrators working the client? Or the next level in hierarchy of the foldsing?

who I am working for for free gets bonus points. Anyway a few weeks anf I will have a GPU for the server...

Client roughly equals the fah software on your computer. The boss also known as the server in a client-server relationship is the Folding@home project at Stanford.

The bonus points go to you. Accept the extra points, or do not accept them. Your choice. Doesn't matter to fah either way. Only matters to your point totals.

You can read more about it in the Points FAQ.
