Single-Slot for Folding - GeForce GT 730/740

Post by 2N5R »

Hello everybody,

my computer has only one single PCIe Slot free with less space - i would like to equip one more GPU (besides the 980 Ti) for Folding.
As it needs to be Single-Slot, possibilities are limited. Do you guys have an advice?
What about Nvidia GeForce GT 730 or GT 740? Seems the best choice for me...

Thanks!

if it can be double slot, this GTX 750 ti is much more powerful.

There is no space for a double-slot card...

I'm not running FAH GPUs on my low-profile systems. The half-height cards that I have are too old for FAH. I'm working on a way to use an external GPU with a PCIe extender cable and a 12 supply. If you come up with a half-height solution that seems like a good investment, I'd probably install a couple of them.

I do run a couple of GT 740 single-slot GPUs (along side my dual-slot GPUs) but they're full-height boards. They're fast enough to meet the deadlines.

This one is a gtx 750 ti low profile with the slot has single front but the cooler is higher so double slot, maybe that fits?

Or you can remove the cooler and add some water cooling with flat pump?

Nice find, foldy.

Where I have room for a single-slot GPU, the x16 slot is next to a solid chassis wall. Even if there happens to be just enough extra space for the fans, air circulation would be severely restricted. Cutting a hole for a ventilation grill would be about as much work as adding water cooling.

The gtx 750 ti is a great GPU in it's class as long as the heat can be dissipated and the necessary 12v power can be supplied. Some are wired for external power; some use only power from the slot.

i can find a 384 cuda core 730 (730 are also sold with fewer cores) that is a true single slot

Nice - I've got a few of the 384 core 730 folding quite nicely, but mine are full height, single slot or low profile, dual slot (passive). They also have the advantage of being below the 25 W power cap that the PCI slots in some low profile systems have. Not exactly high end, but good for roughly 14k PPD which is still more than the CPUs get.

Thank you guys for your answers!
I will be going for the 740 then.
But I do have a double Slot GTX 670 laying around - any way to connect the card for F@H with an PCIe-Extender? I'm not familiar with extenders, which one should I choose?

For those with low profile GPU upgrade needs, they recently released a Pascal based NV 1050 Ti LP. 75w so no external connecter, but it does require dual slot space. Sorry this wouldn't work for the OP.

Looks like you can mod it by removing the fans and then construct a tunnel to the heat sink and put a fan on the other side of the tunnel if it is feasible depending on the case.

Some sites are saying 150W and some are saying 170W but either way, I have some concerns about getting that heat out of the case with air cooling. ...
but time will tell. I wonder how much noise the fan makes.

Depending on the case maybe some other fans can be attached around the GPU to help get the heat out.
Even when the case has no fan mounting around the GPUs you can make some holes in the case with a drilling machine until it looks like a coarse sieve and attach a fan externally.

If the single slot gtx 1070 gets too hot it will down clock und use less power, maybe downto 120 watts. This decreases PPD but increases efficiency in PPD per watt.

The single slot low profile GeForce GT 1030 on the other hand only needs 30W but is a slow GPU, maybe 50k PPD, but 50% faster than GT 730/740

Several low profile but double slot GTX 1050 ti exist. My Zotac does not need additional power jacks, and does about 140k PPD for me.

Other vendors also sell low profile versions.
