Win10, installed 7.5.1, no shortcut in Startup folder

Post by djgibbons »

I just updated to version 7.5.1 on a Windows 10 OS. No shortcut is present in the Startup folder nor the desktop. I need to reinstall 7.5.1 to get FAH running, as it doesn't auto-start on reboot. Is there a fix?

Did you install with default settings or did you choose different options? Are you logging on with the same ID as you used to install FAH? Have you run FAH while logged on with more than one ID?

The text below was visible in a Command line box the last time I rebooted. It looks like FAH is trying to start on reboot but 'access is denied' somewhere along the line.

Re: Win10, installed 7.5.1, no shortcut in Startup folder

I'm not sure what choices you made when installing but somewhere along the way a bad choice must have been made:

17:29:42: Config: C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient\config.xml
17:29:42: CWD: C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient

Those will not work with folding and why you're seeing access denied (Windows 10 won't allow software to write data to those locations).

Try uninstalling including data and when you re-install choose 'just for you' and use all the default locations. (you could copy your username, team# & passkey so that you have them when you need to enter them again)

The above directories should now start with:

C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\FAHClient

If you log on as the Windows User (yourusername) [who is going to run FAH] and accept the defaults when you run the installation, those will be the defaults.

One common error is to logon as Administrator to perform the installation and then expect FAH to run as (yourusername).

I will give this a try and let you know. I have run into issues with the Windows Gestapo app (UEA or similar acronym). I always install as myself and always go with default settings, so other influences may at work here.

Did all of the above but got the same error. I went looking for FAH directories and files, and found some from 2009 and 2013 that were in different directories. So I did the uninstall including Data again, then manually deleted any other FAH files and directories. After reinstallation I finally have a shortcut back on my desktop (but it has a Defender shield imposed on it). When I restart the computer I still get the Command line error as before but the shortcut easily restarts Folding. But I then got this error when I wanted to get back to this forum:
File not found: file:///C:/Users/Duncan/AppData/Roaming/Folding@home-x86/MyFolding.html

I went through the main website to get into the forum. Should the program be loaded here?: C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient
I also have this directory: C:\Users\Duncan\AppData\Roaming\FAHClient

Are these correct?

Yes, those are the correct directories for a default install of folding@home.

The error you're seeing may be caused by an older shortcut in your windows startup directory. If you see two shortcuts for folding delete the older one or if you only see one you can replace it with the desktop shortcut that works.

For windows 10 use win key + r which should open a Run box and type shell:startup which should open an explorer window in the following directory:
C:\Users\Duncan\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
There should be a shortcut for folding@home which as I said above you can replace with the one on your desktop that you know works using copy & paste or if you'd prefer not to start automatically simply delete the shortcut in your startup directory.

I will try this and see what happens. I am concerned about the Defender shield overlaid on the FAH icon. This may indicate that Defender sees FAH as a threat and forces manual starting. Not really an issue for me, but I have FAH running on a newer computer, and there is no Defender shield overlaid on the icon, and FAH starts with every reboot. I am curious about the differences (my problem computer is about 10 years old).

Same issue. Folding seems to be active but I still get the Command line box with the 'access is denied' error. When I close this box the client is also shut down. So I click the desktop icon and folding starts normally.

Sounds like some folder permissions have been changed somewhere. If you're content with clicking on the desktop icon to start folding after a reboot then I'm good with that too.

This probably happened when you ran FAH as the administrator.

FAH apparently downloaded a FAHCore when logged on with a different ID. This should fix that problem.

* Pause or Finish all WUs.
* Open FAH's data directory (C:/Users/Duncan/AppData/Roaming/Folding@home or maybe .../Folding@home-x86/)
* Move the "cores" subdirectory to the trash.
* When you resume folding, each FAHCore will re-download as WUs start. It may be advantageous to unpause the slots one-at-a-time to allow the cores to be downloaded one-at-a-time.

So far no issues deleting the old 'cores' directory. New auto-created and folding seems to be running fine. My install is here: C:\Users\Duncan\AppData\Roaming\FAHClient

I will check things again with the next reboot to see what happens.
