AS 65.254.110.245 errors 7/8 on server stats page

Post by dwisehart »

It is returning empty work server assignment. Last successful work server was 155.247.166.219:8080

When the AS returns an empty work unit, a second AS is contacted: 18.218.241.186. This AS is not on the server stats page. It also returns an empty work server assignment.

Six hours later, the cycle repeats: contact 65.254.110.245 and contact 18.218.241.186. They both return empty work server assignments again.

This has been going on for 24 hours.

Welcome to the folding support forum.

Please provide information on your system and its configuration. The best way to do so is to post the first 100 or so lines of your log file as outlined in this topic - viewtopic.php?f=18&t=26036.

assign2.foldingathome.org is listed on the new server status page: https://apps.foldingathome.org/serverstats

When an assignment server cannot assign you to a work server with WUs for your configuration, we DO need the information Joe_H has requested.

assign2.foldingathome.org on the server stats page is listed as 172.31.11.240. Perhaps the IP address has changed?

There was a repeat of this error after 30 hours:

I see that your CPU supports 8 threads and FAH is configured to use 7. I'm not sure why that configuration was created, and since I don't run darwin, I can only guess that it's very similar to the Linux client.

If you run FAHClient, I would reconfigure the slot by entering 8 CPUs rather than the default of -1. Hopefully somebody who knows more about that client will correct me if I'm wrong and offer you additional support.

Those are not the first lines of the log, merely the beginning of processing one WU. As it is you cut it off before it showed any processing of that WU, just what WU it was processing.

What is not shown is the full system info and the configuration of the client or the client version. From prior experience I would guess possibly a version earlier than the current 7.5.1 client. Older versions will not work with the WS code to make assignments for less than the number of CPU cores listed at the time a new WU is requested.

I would also guess your OS X client is set to the default of Medium. Moving to Full will request for 8 cores, to Light will use 4. Both should get an assignment when 7 does not.

P.S. This is what the beginning of a log looks like:

Code: Select all

Something changed because this box has been successfully processing work units for over a year.

I will make the adjustments you recommend and see what happens.

I actually sent you the first things in my log except for a couple of these:

Code: Select all

20:37:04:WU02:FS00:0xa7:Completed 172500 out of 250000 steps (69%)
20:39:25:WU02:FS00:0xa7:Completed 175000 out of 250000 steps (70%)
20:41:49:WU02:FS00:0xa7:Completed 177500 out of 250000 steps (71%)
Anything older in the logs is gone.

So I downloaded the latest FAH client and installed it. At first webpage that opened, trying to connect to FAH client failed. I found both the old and the new FAH client running. I killed the old one and then the webpage was able to connect. The log shows this:

It seems the '7' is not changing to '8' and it is not stored in config.xml. Where is the '7' stored?

I found under Configure->Slots->cpu->Edit how to change CPUs from -1 to 8, but AS lowered them back from 8 to 6:

Code: Select all

14:26:42:<config>

It seems the current version does not support more than 6 CPUs. The older version was using 7: I can see the difference in the amount of CPU being using in the MacOS Activity Monitor.

You have a GPU slot configured, but the Mac does not support GPUs. (The OpenCL driver was bad, then inertia)
If you delete the GPU slot, which is not being used, you can use all 8 CPUs. (7 has issues as it is prime, 8 and 6 are not. That is why 7 is not a good choice)

OK, I removed the GPU and restarted. AS still lowers the CPU count from 8 to 6. But at least it is running:

According to the log, you have 0 GPUs (which is correct, since OS-X doesn't support GPU folding.) I'm not sure why your system was configured with both a CPU and a GPU slot, but please remove the GPU slot. After it's removed, you may be assigned projects that run with 8, but if none are available, the new client will search for a project that uses 6, which is apparently what happened above,

There are still some old projects that run with 7 CPUs, but they have a higher failure rate that 8,6,5,4,3,2, or 1 so gradually they're being eliminated. Your future assignments may be 8 or less if the slot configuration and slider allow it.

When you look at the log in FAHControl, it just shows the most recent portion. Note that there's a Refresh button on the lower right which will allow you to view all of it, rather than just the tail.

One other change has occurred on the WU assignment side, once a WU has been assigned with a maximum number of CPU threads, it will not run at a higher number. So in the case of being set at 7, if you the AS has no WU's available for that setting your system will get assigned one for 6 or less threads. Changing the setting higher after the WU is assigned will not change how many threads will be used, the WU will max out at 6 as in this case

Thanks for that. On the next WU it picked up, all 8 cores were utilized.

And thanks for the "Refresh" note: I didn't know about that. Perhaps it needs a name like "Full Log."

As I said, this host has been running for WU over a year, so I am not sure what changed, but I am guessing my older FAH client, version 7.4.4--I do not think I ever updated it or changed its initial configuration--became unsupported for some things. Version 7.5.1 seems to be working fine now. Thanks again.
