[FIXED] Client stops within 1 or 2 mins after starting

Post by SoulReaper »

Hi! the fah client stops working everytime I start it
And this happens within 2 minutes or so
I have whitelisted all the FAH processes in Windows Defender

Can you guys please help me sort it out! Much appreciated :)

The last message from FAH is "06:53:32:WU00:FS00:0xa4:Completed 0 out of 250000 steps (0%)" which indicates it is running. (There's no feedback that it has stopped.) Are you sure it's not running? With only one CPU thread processing, that project might need several days to make signifiant progress -- although there's always the possibility that your power-saving settings are causing your CPU to sleep producing no results until you wake it up.

Thanks for the response. Yes the process just stops abruptly and my web client says that it has been disconnected from the processing client.
(I checked from the task manager and FAH processes just disappear after sometime, sometimes 30 seconds or 1 min or so).

The log is always unable to show why it stopped. All power saving features are disabled on my system and it never sleeps.
I have tried running it in compatibility mode for windows 8 (which I have posted a code for) windows 7 and I am running windows 10 btw. All with and without administrator privileges.

I checked the event viewer while I'm typing this and This is the error that shows up

Try clearing your browser cache, and restart NaCl.
Another thing you can do is get help from a service like this one, to see if your internet connection gets interrupted or not:

@ProDigit: It is the desktop client not NaCL.

@SoulReaper:Crash in igdrcl32.dll is Intel driver. Do you have a GPU graphics card? Can you remove or update Intel iGPU drivers?

The DLL file mentioned in the crash report is a component of Intel Graphics drivers. Did you try to upgrade them to the latest version downloaded from Intel website ?

The Exception code: 0xc0000005 means that your OS has discovered that igdrcl32.dll has attempted to access memory incorrectly.
Possibility #1: Your system is overclocked or overheated and unstable
Possibility #2: The OpenCL code being used is attempting to access the Intel GPU, not the GPU which is supported by FAH. (The Intel GPU is unsupported by FAH. You need to stop trying to use it.)

Uninstalling the OpenCL code that attempts to use the Intel drivers and replacing them with Generic OpenCL code or OpenCL from your GPU manufacturer will fix problem #2. Methods for doing that have been explained above.

Thank you all for the help

ERROR is now FIXED

I downloaded the DLL (igdrcl32.dll) from the web and replaced the offending one present on my system.
For replacing the file I needed to 'take ownership' of the said folder.
(although this might not be the best way but ok)
The FAH processes are now stable and I am able to put all threads on my CPU to use.

@foldy @toTOW yes I simply replaced the DLL instead of updating the driver LOL. Everything seems to be stable, no errors so I'll just let it run, although I have backed up the older DLL file just in case.

@bruce I wasn't trying to use the GPU, the client had only given me 1 slot for CPU and even then it was crashing

Appreciate the help :)

Do you have an AMD or NV GPU in your system ?

According to his log, he has zero supported GPUs but FAH is still attempting to detect which OpenCL devices that can be found. What I don't understand is how FAH got configure this way.

06:53:25: GPUs: 0
06:53:25: CUDA: Not detected: Failed to open dynamic library 'nvcuda.dll': The
06:53:25: specified module could not be found.
06:53:25:
06:53:25:OpenCL Device 1: Platform:1 Device:0 Bus:NA Slot:NA Compute:2.1 Driver:22.20

His i3-7100U CPU does have a HD Graphics 620.

There's a good reason why the Intel iGPU isn't supported ... it can't process all the necessary OpenCL commands.

@ SoulReaper I would reconfigure FAH to remove the GPU slot. Then FAHClient will no longer waste resources trying to fold on the unsupported GPU and it will be able to allocate another CPU thread to folding. It sounds like you've already done that, though.

I suppose it's possible that WindowsUpdate did something wrong with igdrcl32.dll and it caused FAHClient to incorrectly attempt do so something that mistakenly allocated the iGPU to run OpenCL. I recently swtched one of my Linux systems back to 64-bit Windows and applied a number of pending updates. I did get a similar error message. but it was fixed by a later update.

(I see you run 32-bit Windows. Some of my troubles were 64-bit WindowsUpdates so they wouldn't apply to you but there might have been something similar.)

Yes, FAH detected an OpenCL platform, but that's Intel one ... which explains why core crashes when it tries to use it.

@toTOW bruce is correct, I do not have any dedicated GPUs on my system. It's a basic laptop with just the iGPU part of the i3
Yeah man that's what caused the crash

@bruce Oh that's why iGPU is not supported, I was wondering about it. Because it's not too weak to process something.

Yes man I have configured things correctly now. And you have a point there with the Windows Update thing, that must have caused the DLL file to behave incorrectly.

I never update windows manually and after the October update debacle, I have stood my ground haha

I'm running 64 bit OS as well! Windows 10 HOME edition LMAO. You must have seen the client's build in the log. I actually searched the web for 64 bit FAH client versions, but I found none. What people said was there is really no need for a 64bit FAHclient as it doesn't require that much resources, but I don't have much idea about it.

And I wish a very merry Christmas and a happy new year to everyone! Cheers :D

Both happen to be true.

* The Intel OpenCL drivers have caused a lot of problems for a long, long time
* As a general rule, iGPUs are too weak to be worth the efforts.

Some iGPUs on AMD CPU chips are sufficiently compatible that they can be run with the same drivers as a dGPU but they're still too slow...
(The total GFLOP size of GPU WUs are larger than the total GFLOP requirements for CPU WUs so using different components of an AMD CPU for FAH just isn't worth trying to meet the deadlines.)

The F@H framework is a pretty small program that manages the User Experience and communication back to Universities. It is only available in 32 bit, however it may load 64 bit Cores on supported PCs.
AMD's (and intel's) 64 bit technology offers programs 3 advantages
1) more than 4 gigabytes of address space for programs that need it. (F@H cores are fairly small programs, much more CPU intensive than RAM intensive)
2) Longer integer registers. (F@H cores use SIMD registers a great deal, but does not do complex Integer math much)
3) More Integer and SIMD registers. Registers are the very fastest memory locations. (F@H cores can definitely use more SIMD registers, they may also benefit from extra integer registers in a minor way)

So the F@H client is not a sensible 64 bit application, but the Application cores (a4 and a7) can really only use more SIMD registers

An Atom CPU running at 1,6/2.48 Ghz runs a work unit in 15 hours.
There's been debate about whether or not the GPU could do it better.
The GPU of the N3060 runs at 320Mhz, but has 12 execution units, vs only 2 CPU cores.
I would guess the GPU can process information at about the same speed as the N3060, which is not even the slowest x86/x64 CPU around.
If the GPU was supported, I'd estimate there to be a 50% reduction in CPU speed, but 100% increase in GPU speed.
Overall, the N3060 should be 50% faster if the IGP was supported.
Small, but it could make the WU runs acceptable on the client.
Currently, my N3060 is running the NaCl, because it's the only client where I am sure my WUs will be processed before they expire.
