Fedora 30 NVIDIA: 7 GP107 [GeForce GTX 1050 ti]

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Fedora 30 NVIDIA: 7 GP107 [GeForce GTX 1050 ti]

Post by wdanwatts »

I have an AMD Phenom II X2 545 CPU running Fedora 30 which until I had an unfortunate power loss that killed my OS was running the GTX 1050 with CUDA 10.1 and getting ~ 4.5 million points per month. Since rebuilding (from scratch) the system, I now get:

You should post the first 200 lines of your log, which shows the configuration. This will give us many hints, I suspect you have not installed OpenCL off the Nvidia Driver but I could be all wet without the log for hints.

It looks like your insight was correct. Do you have any idea where I can find the OpenCL and where F@H looks for it (to ensure that it is properly ensconced on the system)?
I found that ocl-icd-devel should have libOpenCL.so so I installed it. I get the same results.
Where does FAHClient look for the library?

Not being a Linux user, I am in over my head, but there are hints that the OpenCL driver is part of the CUDA Toolkit.

This is for an older version, version numbers will change.

Hopefully a linux user will drop by

On my Ubuntu systems, I've successfully installed the proprietary drivers in the form of a downloaded .deb file and they include the required elements of CUDA and OpenCL. I have found .deb versions of only a few versions of those drivers for my distro, but they are straightforward and they do work.

I have also corrupted my Linux by trying to use the .run file downloaded directly from nVidia.com. Apparently they work on the server version of Linux but not the version with the GUI. There are documented procedures on how to temporarily shut down LightDM (or whatever X display manager that you're running) before using the .run file. I have not used that method.

Thanks for the hints.
What steams me is the system that go toasted, never stated that it had OpenCL, just CUDA, and it worked fine. Grr!
Oh, well, on to THIS challenge.
I'll post again if/when I make progress or have my fill of frustration.

While I fiddle, can/will someone let me know where FAHClient looks for the OpenCL library?

FAHClient looks for video drivers -- which once included OpenCL. Installing the drivers from either AMD or nVidia used to always include OpenCL. Apparently AMD no longer does. As far as I know, nVidia still does unless you (optionally) exclude it. When WindowsUpdate installs a new version of the nVidia drivers, they do NOT include OpenCL

It seems that support for OpenCL across the entire industry is gradually decaying. FAH probably should be redesigned to either use some alternative or to insure that there's a working version of OpenCL on each system that includes a supported GPU.

Where (what path or set of paths) does a Linux box version of FAHClient look for the OpenCL driver?
The one I got is in /usr/lib64/libOpenCL.so but it doesn't appear to be seen/used/helpful by the F@H software.
Is there someone who can/will let me know how to get clGetDeviceIDs() to NOT return -1 :?:

I'm running Fedora 30. What I do is install the Nvidia driver and CUDA from RPMFusion. I have tried in the past to just install OpenCL, but was never able to get F@H to find it.

Thanks for the RPMFusion approach. I will try it and report on the upshot of that tack (I may have questions on specific packages). If it DOES work (which is likely how I folded before my system loss) then it means that FAHClient DOESN'T need OpenCL and can use a CUDA-ONLY path.

Actually it doesn't mean that. nVidia has packaged its OpenCL support with it CUDA support. How that gets broken up depends on which linux distro you are dealing with, some separate the two and others leave them together.

When FAH design a FAHCore to analyze the WUs of a project, it can compile it to interface with OpenCL or with CUDA (and potentially other APIs). In general FAH always compiles their FAHCores to work with OpenCL -- especially since OpenCL is supported by both nVidia and AMD. If it's compiled against the CUDA API, the FAHCore would not be able to be used with AMD GPUs. (CUDA is proprietary for nVidia only.)

Either the OpenCL api or the CUDA api can be installed on your system. OpenCL is available from several sources. if you obtain it from nVidia, it is always packaged with CUDA. (and they'd probably be happy if FAH excluded competition from AMD, but we don't want to do that.) It is reasonable to assume that the nVidia version of OpenCL sits on top of their functional CUDA support package rather than operating independently. (The OpenCL version that you could have installed from khronos.org would have been self-contained.)

Well! The RPMFusion approach suggested by goodyca worked!
After I
1) removed other software repositories for Nvidia drivers,
2) enabled the RPMFusion software repository,
3) followed the steps delineated at https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA#Curr ... ro.2FTesla
3a) removed any conflicting updates I had tried
4) rebooted

the system recognized the GPU and started running on it!

Code: Select all

while it runs the GPU. :D

[UPDATE] - I had questions about my hard drive, so I copied it to a ssd and now am running on it.
Question - After doing a system update, I had to reset the cuda index to 0 to get it to run. Is this a known behaviour?

According to your log:

09:22:12: GPUs: 1
09:22:12: GPU 0: Bus:1 Slot:0 Func:0 NVIDIA:7 GP107 [GeForce GTX 1050 Ti] 2138

09:22:12: OpenCL: Not detected: clGetDeviceIDs() returned -1

... your gpu is identified as CUDA Device 0: so cuda index should be set to 0. I don't have enough information to guess why it got set to something else.
