Slow Folding GTX1080 WIN10

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Slow Folding GTX1080 WIN10

Post by mrindian1947 »

Hi - I just wanted to post this info.
My Win10 computer was getting around 500k/day in points. After reinstalling the OS it went down to 120-140k per day with a GTX1080

I was curious so I installed Mint on a separate partition (dual boot)
Under Linux Mint - Same computer same Card I now get 800-900k ppd

The biggest issue in going to Linux was getting the CUDA / OpenCL installed as the drivers did not include it and I had to keep reading different messages on this forum as to how to get them installed. It would be nice if it was left as a sticky.

I then installed mint on a second folding rig with a RTX2080 and it went from 1.5m ppd to 2m ppd under Linux!

My issue on that box to get the folding working was in the advanced settings it was set to GPU=false on installation due to the OpenCL not being installed yet. After searching and reading multiple messages I found that issue and got it resolved.
Now if I could run my business s/w on my Linux machines I would never go back to WIN10 (I tried WINE and it wouldn't work with my s/w - my s/w has to read from a MS SQL server)

Thanks for reading!

Gary

Is there a reason you are not using a recent driver version? I am on 441.87 and you are on 419.67 (I doubt this is the issue, just curious)

Windows handles the PCI-E bus poorer than Linux does, so you will never do as well.

I suspect you dropped out of the Quick Return Bonus briefly. QRB really helps Points Per Day.

Drivers do not influence FAH folding performance as OpenCL 1.2 was not updated anymore in drivers. That may change for nvidia when CUDA GPU core gets released this year.

You can try Crossover for Linux, based on Wine but with some tunings for suppirted applications, and more user friendly; free trial available for download from their site.

But they do, at least for Pascal GPUs. Fastest Linux drivers for Pascals - 390.67, on Pascal GPUs nearly all other drivers after and before them slower for 3-5% depending on WU.

How did you come to that conclusion?

Occasionally Nvidia slows down GPUs due to recorded errors to safer levels.
In such cases, it's entirely possible to gain pre-driver speed back, by applying a higher overclock (one that was previously unstable).
Most newer drivers are made to:
1- Optimize game settings,
2- Include compatibility with newer GPUs

And do nearly nothing for folding in terms of performance.

Also know that unless you have consistent results (days on end lower speeds) that a quick look at the FAHConsole number on the right, is not the way to measure performance.
I did run several servers at a very stable setting for months, and could see fluctuations by as much as 10% in a month's time, just by the WUs sent to me; without changing hardware, overclock settings, drivers, or any other.
