New install keeps rebooting

Post by paulw1944 »

First time user, just installed current release only to have computer keep doing immediate shut downs and reboot. Sometimes system will shut down in less than 30 seconds other times it will take a minute or two. At this point I uninstalled the software. Any thoughts? Cpu is an i9-9900K, gpu Nvidia Quatro rtx 4000 (driver 12/6/19 version 26.21.14.4166).

It's possible that your CPU or GPU is getting too hot and your motherboard is forcibly shutting down your computer to keep things safe. So I would look at temperatures using tools like GPU-Z or Speccy. The other possibility is that you're encountering Blue Screens of Death, but you didn't mention that so I'm inclined to think it's related to temperatures.

Temps are fine, gpu 37, cpu 39. No Blue Screen of Death, just an abrupt shutdown. I did update the video driver to the most current (released today), reinstalled FAH, same results.

Only thing I can think of is a power supply that might be marginal on one of the voltages it supplies and the GPU going active quickly is just enough to cause a shutdown.

Dual power supplies, excess power. BTY, there have been no downloads from FAH.

Well, the lack of downloads is because there's been a massive number of newcomers eager to help out with F@h and everyone is consuming workunits faster than expected, but that will even out once the new servers are online.

I wonder if there's any kind of clues in the Windows Event logs.

Shutdowns and reboots during heavy CPU load is almost always due to a) an insufficient power supply, b) too high overclock or c) not enough core voltage for the CPU. If you try running a heavy stress test program like Prime95 or Intel Burn Test (LinX), do you get the same issues?

Many thanks for everyone's help!

it seems that a lot of issues are indeed between the screen and the chair at times
