V 7.5.1 Completely crashes windows 10!

Post by logebear555 »

Hey All,

Windows 10 will crash semi-randomly (at least once or twice a day) due to something going wrong in FAH.

It's very strange, there's no BSOD, or any kind of system recovery that shows up, my computer will just blink off like there's a power cut. So it seems like the error is so bad that even windows can't recover from it!

I've checked that there are no hardware issues, Furmark and Prime95 can run side by side for hours with no issues and the system is drawing well below what the power supply can handle.

Iv tried reinstalling FAH with no success

Heres some more info on my system:
Windows 10 1903
FAH V7.5.1
CPU - Ryzen 3700X
GPU - RTX 2070 Super
750W Power Supply

A few have posted of problems with systems having similar hardware, some have traced it to inadequate cooling for their Ryzen CPU. You can try reducing the number of CPU threads assigned to folding and monitoring temperatures.

One person posted a link to an article that put forward that the location of the chipsets in the Ryzen is a bit off center, so orientation of the cooler can make a difference. A larger cooler was used by another.

The fan and power curve for the RTX 2070 may also need checking.

For testing run FAH only on CPU and disable GPU slots for some days then vice versa. To see if CPU or GPU alone makes a problem.

It is a hardware issue and FAH uses compute on GPU which can be more demanding than game stress testing like furmark.

There is one benchmark which is also very demanding on GPU. Maybe try that

I guess power supply overload or a 12V plug from power supply to mainboard or to GPU has sporadic issues. If there is voltage or power discrepancy it must shutdown. What brand is your power supply? Does it have several 12V lines?

Are you monitoring your temperatures and voltages? HWMonitor from CPUID is a good choice to see if you have any problems.

Many GPUs are VERY sensitive to fluctuations in the 12V output. Monitor the 12V rail over time to see if there are any significant spikes or dips. HWMon shows mine at 11.904 - 12.096, which is < +/- 0.1V or 0.8%. The ATX and EPS specs allow +/- 0.6V or 5%, which may be too large a variation for some systems.

You're on Windows 10 version 1903, have you tried updating to the current 1909?
Do you even fold bro?
