Anyone else notice this?

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Anyone else notice this?

Post by iceman1992 »

I've been folding with my stock GTX 1660 for over 2 weeks, it's been very stable, no problems at all.
Usually it's stable at 1860-1875MHz core clock, 100W power consumption, 70C GPU temp, PPD 500-600K.
Today I got a notification of a new driver available. Then I started folding. Suddenly it won't boost anymore.
It was folding at 1530MHz core clock, 60W power consumption, 60C GPU temp, PPD 350-450K.
Then I updated the driver, and everything is back to normal again.
Seems like the driver refuses to boost GPU clocks if there's a new driver available? Or just coincidence?

I don't install the GeForce Experience application so never get any new notification. Moreover, I prefer to use the Studio Driver over the Gaming Ready Driver. I think it might be a coincidence so let's wait and see what other have to say about this.

Studio Drivers are more focused towards stability and performance towards creativity applications. They don't necessarily include new features for the sake of new features.
Gaming Drivers are to support the latest games and can be unstable. They may contain the latest features.

I prefer stability since my desire to fold is stronger than my desire to game :D If you want, you can read this article: https://www.thefpsreview.com/2019/08/12 ... rformance/

Did you check core 21 vs core 22 projects?
Core 22 is notorious for taxing the GPU more heavily, which can result in lower GPU frequency.
