No WUs available for this configuration

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

No WUs available for this configuration

Post by ClemSNide »

I've been having problems getting a GPU work unit over the past couple of weeks.

I first noticed this on 18 April. The CPU slot was running but the GPU was going through lots of attempts. After a week (and 42 attempts) I checked the boards and found the 7.6.9 update, which I installed. That seemed to work; I got one project, and then it was back to the failures.

My concern is that my GPU may have been re-redlined. After years of service it was delisted until an administrator approved the card ID. (GPU-Z reports it's 1002 6899 - 1002 0B00.) The drivers have been updated to the latest version.

Here's the first 100 lines of the log, with both slots. Only slot 1 has the issues.

I haven't done anything unusual with the installation except put the program & data files onto my D drive.

After poking around, I found a log file that may be more useful.

Based on it being a HD 6850 or similar, your GPU likely does not support double precision. Can you look back in your logs and confirm whether the last work unit it received was FahCore_21? There are still a few of those projects around (listed as OPENMM_21) but most new GPU projects are using FahCore_22.

True. The HD 6850 does not support DP (FP64). That was introduced with the HD 69xx series.

This has been goin on for almost 12 hrs:

I have 4 cards of the same type, only 1 is doing this the other 3 keep going, same server.

Those last messages are from the Assignment Servers, they can not match up your system's request with a Work Server that has suitable projects, WUs, and connections available.

As for the GPU, if it is an actual HD 5800 series card, those support DP. The HD 6800 series cards do not, while the HD 6900 series do.

Fortunately I'm a pack rat and save my receipts. A sighted friend told me that I had a Sapphire Radeon HD 5850.

We went through this a while ago; that's why I included the GPU-Z card ID earlier. It does appear to support double precision.

However. I'm concerned that even if it gets the stamp of approval this time, I'll just have to go through the same routine in three months. If my card is that much of a problem, perhaps the solution is for me to stop folding. Let me know what you decide.

HD 5850 is listed as species 5 in GPUs.txt and should be capable of folding:
0x1002:0x6899:1:5:Cypress PRO [Radeon HD 5850]

An older version I had locally listed it differently:
0x1002:0x6899:1:5:Cypress Pro [Radeon HD 5800/6850]
HD 6850 is a Barts Pro and shouldn't have been combined in the label.

Can you try deleting GPUs.txt and restarting your computer to get the latest version?

Your card is still whitelisted, that is not part of the problem. Looking at your most recent log, the folding client is not seeing an OpenCL device listing for your GPU. One possible reason, a recent video driver upgrade either by Windows Update or from AMD. The Windows Update would not include OpenCL, and recent driver releases from AMD also remove OpenCL support for older cards such as the HD 5850.

If this is a driver problem due to an update, one of the last Catalyst drivers still supports OpenCL from what I have seen posted. You would need to revert to that driver to get folding to work. I will let you decide if that is worth the effort to get the card able to fold again.

The messages about not being able to get an assignment are due to there being more requests for GPU work assignments than the servers can currently provide. That is being worked on, but it can take a number of requests before an assignment is made.

It does sound like a less than optimal solution. If I run into trouble with another app, you know the first thing the customer support representative is going to ask, just before telling me they're afraid they can't help in that case.

I went through the steps above (delete GPUs.txt and reboot); this also required a reinstall. It continues to give me the "No WUs for this configuration" error, which has remained constant for two weeks now.

I don't know why AMD discontinued their OpenCL support, but I have zero pull with the company. Guess this is the end of my folding.
