Yes, the card was running at boost clocks by default.

I have changed Performance - Tuning - GPU Tuning to Manual and lowered the clocks by 18% so it's limited to 1.65GHz now, and also increased fan speed by 15% in Fan Tuning; let's see what happens...

Radeon RX 5700 XT boost clocks

Post by DmitryKo »

Nah, the video driver crashed Windows with bugcheck 0x116 VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE a few times. Uninstalled Adrenalin 20.4.2 (driver version 26.20.15029.27016) to let Windows Update download pre-release AMD WDDM 2.7 driver version 27.20.1002.34.

Also discovered that with 14% lower max frequency (~1.0V voltage), auto fan control prefers ~1000RPM no matter what temperature the GPU is running... so changed Fan Tuning - Advanced Control - Fine Tuning Controls - P4 to throttle Fan Speed at 5% higher RPMs and lower Temperature of 80C. Now the GPU runs at 65-70C under FAH load, instead of 80-85C previously.

That's what I would suggest, higher fan curve, and instead of touching the voltage sliders, keep them stock, and change the Wattage settings.
Reducing the wattage, will allow your GPU to dynamically adjust the voltages, rather than passively.

Another benefit is, that if you have a weak PSU, adjusting the Wattage will increase GPU stability.
In my early days of folding, I would run a 500W PSU at 550W on the wall; and never had any power issues when configured optimally (did that until I purchased a bigger PSU).
But when I leave the wattage slider to 100%, chances of voltage instability was a lot higher.

Personally, if your PSU is not from a well-known brand, I would make it a top priority to get a decent one with a high efficiency... a cheap PSU can end up with a mini display of fireworks in your chassis :(

I will try tweaking the Wattage, but so far it's been stable on the preview WDDM 2.7 driver, even though Utilization in Metrics seem to be somewhat lower.

PSU is Thermaltake ToughPower Grand 850M, it's actually good for two high-end video card, and my X570 motherboard has two 16x PCIe slots and auxiliary 8-pin + 4-pin power connectors. I'm thinking about getting an RX 5500 XT to supplement the RX 5700 XT.

Unfortunately Wattage alone does not fly without lowering Max Frequencies slider as above - got an instant driver crash trying to play back a video in Microsoft Edge (Chrome).

I don't know the procedures on AMD GPUs.
I do know that their overclocking potential is a lot less than Nvidia.
And that at least one user has been successful in lowering power output on their 5700XT GPUs.
