Servers ready for another 10x PPD increase?

Post by foldy »

With Corona Virus crisis FAH got a 10 x PPD increase. Would the servers be ready for another 10 times increase in PPD? :eo

At this point in time they would probably be in no better/worse position than when the first wave arrived ... Some things would be better no doubt and lessons have been learned but other are still overstressed and causing issues with solutions possibly still a way off.

On a wider front (but that links to the servers and how they would cope) - from the perspective of onboarding and helping new folders who aren't the traditional enthusiasts and have a different lens on FAH without any of the background/history, it would be a struggle as it was/has been for the first wave explaining the issues/problems/challenges in a meaningful way.

[I am just a volunteer folder like yourself, I have no special knowledge]

I do not think the servers have caught up to the last 10x increase. I doubt there is any preparedness for another.

I don't see that happening. In fact I expect the WU being processed will level off in about six to ten weeks. (somewhat a side note: Interestingly 2019 shows a pretty significant dip for WU's processed. I'm not sure what that is about but it is curious.) The reason why I think it is going to level off is simply that people are going to have to get back to work, there are already many protests and people just flat out ignoring sheltering at home orders, and to be honest I can't say I blame them. There are ways to deal with the pandemic that don't involve continuing massive economic destruction which is a completely legitimate and major concern.

Is there any reason to expect another 10x increase? Based on the folding stats page, F@H has lost about 200 petaflops from the peak 2 weeks ago - I imagine it will slowly decline, unless the new strain of Covid brings another wave of new / returning folders.
