GT 710 LP folding but SLOW

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

GT 710 LP folding but SLOW

Post by Bubba9240 »

Any ideas on why my newly installed GPU is clocking an average time per fold of 33 minutes? OS=Fedora 31, GPU=GT 710 LP 2 MB video Ram Hardware=HP ProLiant DL360 (G7) 2 @ Xeon 2.65 CPU, 32GB Ram. Prior to GPU install I was averaging 65,000 points per day on this box, this morning's projection was 41,000. Not sure where to start troubleshooting.

That GPU is a relatively old GPU and not very powerful. It then depends on the specific WU that is running on that GPU, e.g. how complex it is, how long it will take to calculate a frame.
Before "installing" the GPU, did you fold on a different GPU or only on the CPU? Are you still folding on the CPU?

Previously folding on CPU only. VGA out from motherboard chip. Installed a new video card with this GPU. Selected due to low power requirement. Now trying to fold with both CPU and GPU.

Welcome to Folding@Home!

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/g ... -710.c1990

This GPU fulfills all the minimum prerequisites for folding; It can do Double Precision floating point math (FP64) and OpenCL 1.1, but is 6 years old. (think dog years)

Nvidia hints about the power of a GPU with the second number from the right. GT 710 is a weak card RTX 2080 is a powerful card.

So the GT 710 is a minimal card (I once owned a G 205, even weaker and older)

The next one or two numbers GT 710 , G 205, RTX 2080 indicate generations of cards so the GT 710 is also old.

The LP stands for Low Profile, LP cards tend to be louder and weaker due to smaller fans. The GT 710 may not need a fan at all.

i hope your GT 710 continues to fold for you!

Generation 7 is, indeed, pretty old, but the really critical number is the second digit: GT 710. Two things indicate that's a really slow GPU, The fact that its called a GT nnn rather than a GTX nnn and the fact that it's a x1x rather than a x5x or a x8x number. The x10 card is the weakest/cheapest card in the x generation. I have both a GT 710 and a GTX 750 still active (along with some newer cards)! The 750 card puts out a reasonably respectable PPD for that generation of card but my GT 710 is not allowed to process any assignments because it's just too slow to satisfy me. In several cases where I need a LowProfile card, I have upgraded to a GTX 1050 LP or other newer choices like the GTX 1650. (all three are under 75W so they don't need any power except from the slot.)

Be sure you have room for a double-wide card, though. In some cases, the PCIe slot is against the case wall  and in other cases, it's second from the wall. :D

I finally bit the literal bullet, and relegated my GT 710 to an older Dell quad-core system I have Fedora 32 running on, due to the fact that the current drivers for it (when I had it on my Win 7 SP1 x86 64-bit machine) kept crashing.

That GPU, I'd be surprised if it even makes the deadlines.
A GT 730 (with DDR3 memory) is much faster (about 2x to 3x faster) , and even that one is questionable if it makes the deadlines.
A GT 1030 is at least 5x faster, and it takes about 22 hours to do 1 WU.
And that is with overclocking it to an inch of killing it!

If you do want to use the 710 for folding, I'd recommend to increase the GPU heat sink (if it has an active one). You can buy cheap heatsinks on Amazon, cost like $0.5 or so.
And then put an active fan on it. Or at the very least, mount it close to the PSU fan, to have some sort of airflow going.
That's what I did with my 1030, which was passively cooled from the factory.
It allowed me to run a higher boost and RAM frequency.

On a GT 710, just an aluminum plate with thermal pads under would probably suffice to keep it cool.

I am no longer looking to run GPU work units on my Fedora v32 (x86-64 bit) systems, as I have a 4GB Zotac card w/the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 GPU coming within the next couple of days. It will be going in my Win 7.0 (SP1 x86-64 bit) system.

BTW: One of those Fedora systems is an older Alienware laptop, which has 2 ATI (now part of AMD) GPU's that may no longer be supported by the current drivers.

Final update: No go on the GTX 1650 for now--I need to put together a newer system. :(

Old systems usually support up to a 1060 (3 or 6GB).
If you can get your hands on an old 1060 (6GB preferred, because it's like a Ti version of the 3GB), it will run on most PCIE 2.0 motherboards.
