New Ryzen CPUs faster than last gen GPUs?

Post by MeeLee »

I've read a few comments on how well FAH scales on Ryzen CPUs.
One user claims to get 550k PPD on a 3900x, while another claims over 1M PPD on his 3950x.
Is this possible?

I know on a 6 core, 3,2Ghz Intel CPU I can get about 35k PPD, which is a LOT more than the 1k PPD I get from a dual core Atom processor.
But to see 1 Mil PPD on a Ryzen 3950x is quite a lot!

It almost closes the gap between CPU and GPU!

Is it because they're using new instructions (AVX/AVX2)?
Or an adjusted CPU PPD system?

It's my understanding that large CPU Projects can run a lot more efficiently on large number of CPUs. It would be possible that the large CPU Projects running on 32 threads generate that many points. The AVX2 requirement has been there for a while so it could be down to the implementation by AMD VS that of Intel. I haven't done too much research into that... yet.

The data submitted to the HFM PPD Database doesn't show those numbers. Granted there's no 3950x but the averages for the 39000X sit around 300K

my slow xeon 32/56 slot makes 175/200k normal variance … double it for how much faster 3950x can run (at least) so 350/400k and adjust upwards a fair bit because of QRB factors ought to push that well past 500k at a guess … then get a 13872 WU drop in (3-4x points than variance) and I would guess a single WU (or Mark 1 eyeball at client) PPD rate of well over 1M might well be possible … as to the sustained rate I really can't comment but the benchmarking thread viewtopic.php?f=38&t=35286 gives indications of just shy of 450PPD but on a benchmarked standard configuration so actual potential achievable in other configurations may rise higher?

I know that the FLOPS difference between a 3950x and a 3900x is only 10%.
So perhaps the ability to scale more threads vs fewer threads at higher core frequency plays a role?
Or perhaps the +1M PPD user, did it short term on an overclocked Ryzen? Not sure...

I reinstalled FAH on my main machine to have a look. On a 3970x, a 32 CPUs slot now crunching 16424 (739, 2, 83) at around 4.2 GHz (~140 W) predicts a PPD of 406744.

EDIT: Come to think of it, it's rather low. I remember reaching over 350K with 24 CPUs slots on that processor. We'll see later.

EDIT2: Next job is 14808 (1296, 0, 12), now at over 8% announcing a PPD of 458435.

EDIT3: Third job is 16806 (9, 552, 31), now at 9%, PPD of only 344572.

EDIT4: (Note 3td job: 361169 at the end). Forth job: 14532 (929, 1, 20), now at 7%, for a PPD of 568722.

EDIT5: Fifth job: 14820 (139, 2, 74), now at 8%, for a PPD of 441512.

I stop here (I'll add the log later for reference). An overclocked 3950x may well reach 500k, for a while, but 1M? No, not even under liquid nitrogen.

Thanks for confirming.
However, it only needs a small boost in frequency to get a big increase in PPD.
Some motherboards actually have 12VRMs, and can provide the 3950 up to 180W for a continuous all core 4,2-4,3Ghz.
My experience with the 3950x is that it barely ever hits 4,150Ghz. Most of the time it's running at 3,85Ghz on all cores.

I have two Ryzen 3950X (Ubuntu 18.04.4) and they are averaging a little over 600 k PPD, with lows around 480 k and highs around 720 k or so.
They have reasonably fast (3200 MHz 14-14-14-31) memory, but are not overclocked or otherwise tweaked in any way. I use fairly ordinary ASRock B450M Steel Legend motherboards.

I also have a couple of Ryzen 3900X (Ubuntu 18.04.4) and used them briefly on Folding. They did around 500 k PPD, and are a good buy.

I don't think 1 M is reasonable either.

I'm deducting now.
The 3950x is rated to be 8% faster than the 3900x on online benchmarks.
Your PPD results shows a max of 720k PPD, while the 3900x shows 500k PPD.

You nearly got halfway between 500k and 1M PPD, running a stock 3950, that's reported to be only 8% faster as a 3900x.
Which means if someone is able to overclock the 3950x by 10%, he would hit 1M PPD.
The 3950x is reported to be very overclockable, if you only have the right motherboards.
The $150 motherboards won't do that for you.

I never overclock, and purposely choose motherboards that don't have extra hardware for it.

PBO is a form of overclocking. If you have it enabled, you are overclocking.

Building on what MeeLee said, I have read somewhere that some motherboard companies do enable PBO as a default setting. I am aware that some high-end Intel motherboard use a "default" overclock to ensure that their motherboard performs "better" when compared to other vendors during benchmarks.

Yes.
What makes things worse, is that AMD uses PBO by default to overclock (all of a sudden your 65W CPU runs at 95W, and your 105W CPU runs at 145W); and then motherboard manufacturers are trying to compete with one another, using all kinds of trickery, like, increasing the bus speed (from like 100Mhz to 101Mhz or so); just to get the lead on other manufacturers.
This often results in crashes, failed boots, and sometimes, the Motherboard can't even get into BIOS anymore.
Bus overclocks not only overclock the CPU and RAM, it also overclocks the PCIE slots, which doesn't work with many GPUs or SSD drives.

But they're shooting themselves in the foot by such 'tactics', as if a board doesn't work because of an incompatible overclock, they are just going to get more returns on perfectly good boards, if the bus speed was just reset back to 100Mhz.

After running an AMD 3970X (and some last gen GPUs) for a month I wanted to add my perspective.
It's a great CPU for me. I'm usually running many Docker containers (often within a VM) for my development work. After years of dual Xeon boards I made the switch to a single CPU because it has an ample amount of cores and I'm glad I did (increased performance, smaller board size, more mainstream, less pricey).
For F@H, I've tried 1 or 2 CPU slots with 32 cores each and total results are 500K to 700K PPD either way. I guess if I enabled some overclocking and fiddled with settings I might get it closer to 1M PPD. The CPU uses about 280W and hovers around 75 deg C (custom WC loop, liquid metal TIM). It drives my fans and pumps to full speed and I can definitely hear the system working. In contrast, my 3 GV100 cards combined use less than 400W and output 7M+ PPD at ~45 deg C (system stays whisper quiet).
So, from my experience I'll have to answer the topic with 'no'.
However, I'll keep running the CPU slots for a while longer because I really want to support moonshot with everything I got.

From what I've read, you'll get higher PPD by running more threads.
If you can get WUs for more than 32 cores, like 48 or higher, you'll definitely surpass 1M PPD.
