Running client dumps files onto desktop

Post by realicraft »

Recently, when I start the FAH client, it dumps several folders onto my desktop.
The files dumped seem to be the same as the ones in %APPDATA%\FAHClient, so it could be that the client is trying to update the files, but it putting them in the wrong place.
The files and folders put on the desktop are:
  • cores (folder)
    work (folder)
    logs (empty folder)
    configs (folder)
    GPUs.txt
    log.txt
    config.xml
The contents of log.txt are: (with slight changes to protect identity and stuff)

Code: Select all

Re: Running client dumps files onto desktop

Apparently you're not using the shortcut provided by the installer to start FAH. I notice that this log reports CWD: C:\Users\user\Desktop. Is that the actual data on that line or have you edited that line to hide your actual Windows user name with "user" instead of your actual userid?

If you used the default settings when you installed FAH, that should NOT be the value being used for that setting ... nor should "desktop" ever be part of that line.

Probably the easiest way to fix this is to upgrade to the latest version of FAHClient, accepting the default directory locations and reentering your FAH User_name and FAH_team if you want to use one. You'll also want to get a passkey but that can wait until you post the next version of FAH's log showing better locations for all the information.

Look for FAH's files in a hidden location by opening %APPDATA%/FAHClient in the Windows Explorer. Note: The environment variable %APPDATA% will substitute a string containing you own actual Windows user name and containing the same files that you've been seeing on your desktop, including a similar copy of FAH's log to the one you posted above.

Yes, the line was edited.
The client was previously install on the admin account, but I changed which account I used due to the computer I'm using being shared, so that might be a problem.
Several times, I've moved the files on the desktop to %APPDATA%/FAHClient, so the log there is likely very similar to the one I posted above.
I'll try reinstalling the client to fix the problem. I assume that's either running an uninstaller or deleting the folder in %APPDATA%, then installing it from the website.
Also, I've been using a desktop shortcut to start the client. The shortcut was moved when I moved accounts.

EDIT: It looks like uninstalling and reinstalling fixed the problem.
EDIT2: After an unrelated reboot, FAHClient is getting "Access is denied" errors. I'll post the contents of the command window (since it doesn't seem to be saving logs):

You made a bad choice. Windows prohibits data files from being written to C:\Program Files* since that was once a favorite place for a virus to put something evil. The recommended site is based on the value set in %APPDATA% but that only works if the computer spends most of the time logged on by the user that did the installation.

There's no universal answer. Consider the fact that you don't have to actually log out when somebody else logs on, you might have two or more people logged on at the same time ... moreover the GPU can only belong to one of them. I'd suggest you switch to Linux, but you might not want to do that.

Windows is designed around the concept of one-keyboard/one-mouse/one-screen/one-user although that's no longer a 100% requirement.

It is normally used by my user account. Do I just need to change a config file somewhere to change CWD to %APPDATA%? That's what it sounds like I need to do.

That happens automatically if you install FAHClient from the userid that spends most of the time logged on. If that user doesn't happen to be an Admin, it will ask you for the password of your Admin. The startup shorcut will be reinstalled with the proper location.

If there's an active WU, you can select FINISH and wait for it to be uploaded.

I've already reinstalled it, and no shortcut appeared on my desktop. There is a shortcut in my local startup folder, but I placed that there, with it leading to the client rather than HideConsole.exe, and there being no flags. What is the "target" of the normal shortcut, anyway? I can't seem to find anything online for it.

Start_in is %APPDATA%/FAHClient and Target is normally "C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient\HideConsole.exe" "C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient\FAHClient.exe" --open-web-control
I normally remove the last segment starting with --open... because I don't use web-control.

Be very careful of the quote marks which are required ... exactly as shown in bold.

If you don't mind leaving a perpetually open window showing the console log, you can remove the HideConsole segment leaving just
C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient\FAHClient.exe but most people eventually want to close that window and that kills FAH. i.e.- It's hidden for a good reason.

Shortcuts have moved between Windows7 and Windows10.
