500 PPD?

Post by Folding »

For a moment I started to earn 23,000 points a day, but suddenly, it plummeted to 500

Welcome to Folding@Home!

Your CPU is built for low cost and minimal power usage, so lacks features of desktop CPUs.

https://en.wikichip.org/wiki/intel/celeron/n3060

Your CPU uses SSE2 to fold, an older SIMD tecnology that (at least) halves the speed of newer AVX SIMD.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSE2
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_ ... Extensions

It is a dual threaded CPU, Today's best CPUs have as many as 128 threads, so it is not a powerhouse.

The memory it is designed for is slow, but low powered. to preserve battery life. If it was a Windows box i would guess more memory might help, I am not as sure about Linux.

No Intel GPUs are currently supported. If support is added, I bet it won't be for one that old.

1.6 Ghz is slow for a CPU. some CPUs approach 5 GHZ. MyWindows 10 2.2 Ghz dual thread SSE2 CPU I am typing on, does about 1000 PPD. Linux is often slightly faster than Windows.

My rig meets the deadlines for Folding. If yours does as well, go for it. If not, it was not meant to Fold.

When you first get a WU from a project your client hasn't seen before it has a default estimate for completion time (iirc based on completing it on the Timeout ... over the course of folding the first 5% or so this is refined based on the actual performance of your kit ... it might therefore be possible to initially see a higher ppd estimate than when t settles down on slower kit.

Last time I ran FAH on my N3060, I got about 1000-2000PPD.
Not worth the effort. It barely makes the deadline.
I since use it for Boinc, which can use the GPU (using the Beignet drivers for OpenCL).
The CPU is largely useless for any decent work.
